Peer Smoking and Smoking-related Beliefs Among College Students in Bangladesh

Objectives: Smoking is a significant public health issue in Bangladesh. The purpose of this study was to examine peer smoking and smoking-related beliefs among college students in Bangladesh. Methods: College students at two universities in Dhaka, Bangladesh participated in a self-administered survey in May and June 2017. Results: First, being a current or former smoker is associated with lower levels of beliefs among respondents that they would not smoke even with smoker friends or nervousness, and lower levels of intentions that they would not smoke, while current smokers and former smokers have different smoking-related beliefs. Second, having smoker friends is associated with lower levels of intentions that they would not smoke. Third, higher levels of normative beliefs that it is important not to smoke are associated with higher levels of beliefs that they would not smoke even with smoker friends or nervousness, higher levels of intentions that they would not smoke, and higher levels of avoidance of smoking. Conclusions: Smoking-related beliefs and perceived norms in individuals' social networks are important components in promoting tobacco cessation in Bangladesh. But it is challenging to prevent or intervene in smoking because of the high rates of smoking in this country and the high prevalence of smokers in individuals' social networks. Future studies should examine the most effective interventions to combat smoking in high-smoking social networks, such as using mobile apps or social media, and evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions.

Catalytic activity evaluation of mesoporous a-GaOOH microspheres self-assembly

The mesoporous a-GaOOH was synthesized using oxalic acid in a hydrothermal process at various hydrothermal temperatures and times. The nitrogen adsorption analysis indicated that a-GaOOH with surface areas ranging from 6 to 87 m2/g and pore sizes from 3.8 to 7.2 nm can be prepared by adjusting the experimental conditions. The photocatalytic hexavalent chromium reduction was studied under UV light irradiation and the results showed that a-GaOOH having higher surface area owned higher photocatalytic activity. The degradation of 2-ethoxy ethyl acetate in catalytic ozonation process showed that the degradation was enhanced over ozonation process in the presence of mesoporous a-GaOOH

Gold colloidal nanoparticles were prepared by the liquid laser ablation of a gold metal plate in water and also by the citrate reduction of $HAuCl_4{\cdot}4H_2O$. The gold colloidal nanoparticles with the plasmonic band strongly absorb light, which is converted to the photothermal energy. This photothermal energy gives a cytotoxic effect on epithelial carcinoma cells. Interestingly, we found that the size and shape of the nanoparticles are changed by light during the photothermal process in vitro. The cervical carcinoma cell line (HeLa cell) was incubated with the colloidal gold nanoparticles and then exposed to continuous visible light at 400-600 nm with UV- and heat-cutoff filters. The distinct cell-killing effect was observed by this procedure. In the absence of the gold colloidal nanoparticles, only a small amount of cells were photothermally destroyed.

Resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound, is a powerful antioxidant with remarkable anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation and pain plays an important role in the pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis (OA) and could cause tissue damage and morbidity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and pain reduction activities of orally administered resveratrol in patients with knee OA. We carried out a 90-day pilot study to evaluate the ability of orally administered resveratrol, as an adjuvant with meloxicam, to decrease knee joint pain and biomarkers of inflammation in comparison with a placebo. One hundred ten men and women (45–75 years old) diagnosed with mild to moderate knee OA were treated with 15 mg per day meloxicam and either 500 mg per day resveratrol or placebo for 90 days in a double-blind, randomized control trial. Pain severity was evaluated at the beginning and at the end of treatment using Visual Analogue Scale-100 scores. Fasting blood was collected to determine serum interleukins 1β and 6, tumor necrosis factor-α, C-reactive protein, and complement proteins C3 and C4. The resveratrol-treated group experienced a time-dependent significant decrease in pain severity (P < .001). Serum levels of the biochemical markers were significantly reduced compared with the placebo-treated group (P < .01). These findings suggest that resveratrol may be an effective “add-on” option with meloxicam in the treatment of patients with mild to moderate knee OA.
