        Lotus leaf alleviates hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in animal model of diabetes mellitus

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of lotus leaf on hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in animal model of diabetes. Inhibitory activity of ethanol extract of lotus leaf against yeast α-glucosidase was measured in vitro. The effect of lotus leaf on the postprandial increase in blood glucose levels was assessed in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. A starch solution (1 g/kg) with and without lotus leaf extract (500 mg/kg) was administered to the rats after an overnight fast, and postprandial plasma glucose levels were monitored. Four-week-old db/db mice were fed a basal diet or a diet containing 1% lotus leaf extract for 7 weeks after 1 week of acclimation to study the chronic effect of lotus leaf. After sacrifice, plasma glucose, insulin, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (CHOL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-CHOL, and blood glycated hemoglobin levels were measured. Lotus leaf extract inhibited α-glucosidase activity by 37.9%, which was 1.3 times stronger than inhibition by acarboseat a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL in vitro. Oral administration of lotus leaf extract significantly decreased the area under the glucose response curve by 35.1% compared with that in the control group (P < 0.01). Chronic feeding of lotus leaf extract significantly lowered plasma glucose and blood glycated hemoglobin compared with those in the control group. Lotus leaf extract significantly reduced plasma TG and total CHOL and elevated HDL-CHOL levels compared with those in the control group. Therefore, we conclude that lotus leaf is effective for controlling hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in an animal model of diabetes mellitus.

        Src as a Therapeutic Target in Biliary Tract Cancer

        <P>Src, a nonreceptor tyrosine kinase, is involved in a number of cancer-related signaling pathways and aberrantly activated in biliary tract cancer (BTC). This study aimed to elucidate the potential role of Src as a therapeutic target in BTC. We tested bosutinib, an orally active c-Src/Abl kinase inhibitor, alone or in combination with cytotoxic agents using 9 human BTC cell lines: SNU-245, SNU-308, SNU-478, SNU-869, SNU-1079, SNU-1196, HuCCT1, TFK-1, and EGI-1. Of these, SNU-308 and SNU-478 were relatively sensitive to bosutinib. Bosutinib abrogated phosphorylation of Src and its downstream molecules, and significantly increased G(1) cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis. Bosutinib significantly inhibited cell migration and invasion and decreased epithelial-mesenchymal transition markers. Bosutinib combined with gemcitabine or cisplatin showed synergistic antiproliferative and antimigratory effects. In addition, this combination further inhibited phosphorylation of Src and its downstream molecules and decreased epithelial-mesenchymal transition marker expression compared with bosutinib alone. We established a SNU-478 xenograft model for in vivo experiments, because SNU-478 was more tumorigenic than SNU-308. Bosutinib combined with gemcitabine or cisplatin showed significantly more potent antitumor effects than bosutinib alone. Bosutinib combined with gemcitabine further decreased Ki-67 expression and Src phosphorylation, and further increased TUNEL expression. Our data suggest that Src might be a potential therapeutic target in BTC. Bosutinib demonstrated promising antitumor activity alone or in combination with gemcitabine or cisplatin in BTC cells, which supports further clinical development in patients with advanced BTC.       • The Facile Synthesis of Composition-Tunable Pt—Pd Bimetallic Nanocatalysts and Their Electrocatalytic Properties in Formic Acid

        <P>In this work, Pt-Pd nanoalloys with various compositions were synthesized using a solution plasma process with pure Pt, pure Pd and Pt80Pd20 (wt.%) alloy electrodes. The elemental compositions, structures and morphologies of the Pt-Pd nanoalloys were characterized using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy. In order to examine the electrochemical activities for formic acid oxidation, cyclic voltammetry was conducted using a potentiostat in a nitrogen-purged 0.5 M H2SO4 and 0.5 M HCOOH electrolyte solution. The compositions of as-synthesized Pt-Pd nanoalloys were measured by following: Pt82Pd18, Pt69Pd31, Pt41Pd59 and Pt29Pd71. From the results of the electrochemical characterization, the Pt69Pd31 nanoalloys showed much higher catalytic activity than the other Pt-Pd nanoalloys. Furthermore, and the CO poisoning was strongly affected by the Pd amounts in the synthesized Pt-Pd nanoalloys.</P>

        Effects of Tegoprazan Versus Esomeprazole on Nighttime Heartburn and Sleep Quality in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: A Multicenter Double-blind Randomized Controlled Trial

        Background/AimsPatients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) frequently experience nighttime heartburn and sleep disturbance. Tegoprazan is a new potassium-competitive acid blocker that can rapidly block acid secretion. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of tegoprazan compared with esomeprazole in relieving nighttime heartburn and sleep disturbances. MethodsPatients with erosive esophagitis, nighttime heartburn, and sleep disturbances were randomized to receive tegoprazan 50 mg or esomeprazole 40 mg for 2 weeks. The primary endpoint was time to first nighttime heartburn-free interval. The percentage of nighttime heartburn-free days was also compared between the 2 groups. ResultsA total of 46 patients were enrolled in this study. Time to the first nighttime heartburn-free interval was shorter with tegoprazan than with esomeprazole but the difference was not statistically significant (1.5 days vs 3 days, P = 0.151). The percentage of nighttime heartburn-free days was higher in the tegoprazan group but the difference was insignificant (57.8% vs 43.1%, P = 0.107). Adverse events occurred in 2 patients. They were mild in severity. ConclusionsTegoprazan may induce faster relief of nighttime heartburn symptoms and may improve sleep disorders associated with nighttime heartburn. Further large-scale studies are required to validate our findings.

      • 스마트폰을 이용한 혈당 관리 시스템

        연구목적: 스마트폰 접속형 혈당 모듈로 측정한 혈당 검사 결과를 스마트폰으로 자동 전송하고 모니터 링 할 수 있는 혈당 관리 시스템을 개발하고자 하였다 대상 및 방법: 혈당 모듈과 스마트폰 사이의 통신 기법을 설계하였고, 사용자 중심의 혈당 측정 및 관 리 프로토콜을 작성하였다. 혈당의 수동 입력, 혈당의 직접 측정, 측정 결과 관리, 레포트, 설정의 5개 메뉴로 구성된 스마트폰 혈당 관리 프로그램을 개발하였다. 결과: 스마트폰에 접속한 혈당 모듈로 측정한 혈당값이 스마트폰으로 자동 전송됨을 확인하였다. 혈당 관리 프로그램은 타 기기로 측정한 혈당값의 수동 입력이 가능하였으며, 체계적 혈당 관리를 위한 사용 자 중심의 메뉴들이 잘 동작하였다. 스마트폰의 최대 강점인 scroll 기능을 적용하였고, 음성 안내 기 능을 탑재하여 사용자 편의성을 강화하였다. 결론: 스마트폰을 이용한 혈당 관리 시스템을 개발하였으며, 사용자 중심의 메뉴 구성으로 효율적인 당뇨 관리가 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

      • 스마트폰에 접속 가능한 소형 혈당 모듈

        연구목적: 스마트폰에 접속하여 혈당을 측정할 수 있는 소형 혈당 모듈을 개발하여 그 유용성을 실험 적으로 검증하고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 혈액이 전극에 주입되어 생성되는 전류가 전압의 형태로 변환되어 혈당값으로 변환되는 전기화학적 측정 원리를 적용하여 소형 혈당 모듈을 개발하였다. 혈당 모듈의 최소한의 측정 혈액 양은 0.5 μL이며, 5초 이내로 측정이 가능하도록 설계 및 제작하였다. 스마트폰과의 통신은 frequencyshift keying(FSK) 모뎀 방식을 적용하였다. 혈당 모듈의 정확도 실험을 위해 시판되는 혈당계와 인 공혈액으로 비교 실험을 수행하였다. 결과: 시판되는 제품과의 성능 비교 실험에서 시판 제품은 391 mg/dL를 나타내었으며, 소형 혈당 모 듈은 401 mg/dL를 나타내었다. 혈당 모듈의 크기는 50×30×7 mm로서 휴대의 편리성을 높였다. 결론: 스마트폰 기반의 소형 혈당 모듈을 개발하였으며, 기존 제품과의 혈당 측정 상대오차가 약 2.6%로서 정확한 혈당 측정이 가능함을 실험적으로 검증하였다.

      • Poster Presentation : Fabrication of Dense ZnAl2O4 by Spark Plasma Sintering

        Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4), naturally occurring as the mineral gahnite, is a member of the spinel family. At present zinc aluminate is used as a catalyst for the dehydration of saturated alcohols to olefins, methanol and higher alcohol synthesis, preparation of polymethylbenzenes, synthesis of styrenes from acetophenons, and double bond isomerisation of alkenes. Furthermore, zinc aluminate can also be used as a catalyst support, since it has a high thermal stability, low acidity and a hydrophobic behavior. In this study, we fabricated dense ZnAl2O4 using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) at 1200℃. Through the XRD analysis, we identify ZnAl2O4 of the single phase. Also Optical, physical properties and microstructure were measured.

        정보활용능력과 자기조절능력이 성인학습자가 인식하는 온라인 학습효과의 종단적 변화에 미치는 영향

        목적 본 연구는 성인학습자의 정보활용능력과 자기조절능력, 온라인 학습효과의 변화 양상을 파악하고, 이에 따른 세 변인의 구조적 관계를 탐색하기 위해 수행되었다. 방법 이를 위해 한국교육종단연구 2005(KELS 2005) 자료의 2014(9차), 2016(10차), 2018(11차), 2020(12차)년도에 조사된 데이터를 활용하여 잠재성장모형을 활용한 시간에 따른 변화추이와 종단적 관계를 검증하였다. 결과 시간에 따른 변화추이를 살펴본 결과, 정보활용능력과 자기조절능력, 온라인 학습효과의 평균은 크게 변하지 않았으며, 온라인 학습효과의 평균이 상대적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 정보활용능력과 자기조절능력 모두 온라인 학습효과의 초기치를 정적으로 예측하였고, 변화율 역시 유의하게 예측하였다. 마지막으로 온라인 학습효과의 종단적 변화에 미치는 영향력에 있어 정보활용능력이 자기조절능력보다 더 큰 것으로 나타났다. 결론 성인학습자의 온라인 학습효과의 종단적 변화에 대한 정보활용능력과 자기조절능력이 미치는 유의한 영향에 대해 논의 및 제언을 제시하였다. 안정적인 온라인 학습 효과를 보장하기 위하여 초기부터 정보활용능력과 자기조절능력 등의 역량을 향상시킬 수 있는 사전 훈련이 필요하며, 특히 학습자가 새로운 기술에 대한 습득력과 적응력을 갖출 수 있도록 지원이 요구된다. 본 연구결과를 통해 온라인 학습의 중요성과 활용 분야가 확대되고 있는 상황에서, 온라인 학습의 효과를 높이기 위해 정보활용능력과 자기조절능력의 계발을 위한 방안을 모색할 수 있을 것이다. Objectives The purpose of this study was to identify changes in information literacy, self-regulation, and online learning effectiveness of adult learners, and to explore the structural relationship between the three variables. Methods A potential growth model was used by using data surveyed in 2014 (9th), 2016 (10th), 2018 (11th), and 2020 (12th) of the Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2005 (KELS 2005). The trend of change over time and the longitudinal relationship was verified. Results As a result of examining the trend of change over time, the average of information literacy, self-regulation, and online learning effectiveness did not change significantly, and the average of online learning effectiveness was relatively high. In addition, both information literacy and self-regulation statically predicted the initial value of the online learning effectiveness, and the rate of change was also significantly predicted. Finally, it was found that information literacy was greater than self-regulation in terms of the influence on the longitudinal change of online learning effectiveness. Conclusions Discussions and suggestions were presented on the significant effects of information literacy and self-regulation on the longitudinal changes in online learning effectiveness of adult learners. To ensure stable online learning effectiveness, prior training to improve competencies such as information literacy and self-regulation is required from the beginning, and support is especially required so that learners can acquire and adapt to new technologies. Through the results of this study, it will be possible to seek ways to develop information literacy and self-regulation skills to increase the effectiveness of online learning in a situation where the importance and application fields of online learning are expanding.
