권기수는 한국의 가장 촉망되는 화가 중 한사람이다. 그의 작품에는 많은 동양예술의 비유들과 철학이 담겨져 있다. 화가로서, 권기수는 그의 그림에 동양적 사상과 현대적 사상을 모두 채택하였다. 그의 주요 주제들은 ‘매화꽃, 국화, 난초 그리고 대나무’이다. 이 식물들은 한국에서 ‘사군자’라고 알려졌으나, 영어로 ‘네 개의 품위 있는 식물’ 또는 ‘네 개의 온화한 식물’ 번역되기도 한다. 또한 이 식물들은 네 개의 계절을 나타낸다. 그들은 각기 다른 환경에서 자라나고, 동양 미술에서 이 식물들의 품격과 지성은 매우 중요하게 여겨진다. 권기수 역시 그의 작품 속에 사군자를 소재로 많이 사용하고 있다. 그의 모든 작품에는 ‘동구리’라는 캐릭터가 나온다. 2002년에 빠른 붓 스트로크에 의해 고안된 동구리는 권기수의 작품에서 주요한 캐릭터이다. 동글동글하고 귀여운 인상의 동구리는 많은 사람들에게 칭찬과 사랑을 받는다. 동구리는 보통 ‘사군자’ 가운데 살고 있다. 바위와 산과 같이 특색 있는 지역에 있는‘사군자’는 동구리가 살고 있는 곳이다. 동구리는 또한 등산, 달리기, 앉기 등과 같이 다양한 동작을 취하고 있다. 이 모든 동작들이 이번 과제에서 해석되어온 은유를 묘사한다. Kwon Kisoo is one of the most promising artist in Korea. His paintings portray a lot of metaphors and philosophies in oriental art. As an artist, he adapts both oriental and contemporary ideas to make his paintings. His main motifs are Plum blossoms, Chrysanthemum, Orchid and Bamboos. These plants are known as "Sa-gonja" in Korean but translated as the "Four Gracious plants" or the "Four Gentle Plants in english". These noble plants represent the four seasons. They grow in different weather conditions. In oriental art, these plants are considered very important for their qualities. These qualities are important attributes for gentlemen in literati painting. The drawing of the "Four Gracious Plants" in Kwon Kisoo"s paintings is simplified. He uses lines, shapes and colour to create contours of the motifs. In his paintings, there is another icon he calls "Dongguri". Dongguri is the main character in Kwon Kisoo"s paintings. It was developed in 2002 by fast brush strokes. Dongguri is an admired character because it looks like very cute in Kwon Kisoo"s paintings. Dongguri is always seen living in the midst of the "Four Gracious Plants". The "Four Gracious Plants" with other landscape features like rocks and mountains are places "Dongguri" lives. Dongguri is also often found performing a lot of actions like climbing, running, sitting etc. All these actions depict metaphors which have been unraveled in this study.

A Study on Channel 4’s Station Identification

영국 TV 채널인 채널 4는 세계적으로 가장 유명한 채널 중의 하나다. 그 채널 4의 스테이션 ID 역시, 스테이션 아이디를 포함한 모션 그래픽 발전에 선두적인 역할을 해왔다. 이 스테이션 아이디의 메인 디자인 컨셉은 이 채널의 이름이자 동시에 상징적인 채널 4의 로고 ‘4’이다. 채널 4 에서 처음으로 컴퓨터로 제작된 스테이션 아이디에는 모듈라 타이포그래피가 사용되었다. 모듈라 타이포그래피는 글자를 비슷한 형태로 만들어내는 서체디자인 기술인데, 채널 4의 스테이션 아이디는 컬러풀한 다각형으로 구성되어있다. 이 다각형들은 흩어졌다가 같은 3디 초점으로 모여든다. 또한 채널 4 스테이션 아이디의 모듈 방식은 비슷한 다각형들로 증명된다. 첫 번째 스테이션 ID 이후, 채널 4는 브랜화되었다. 특히 2004년부터 2011년 사이의 채널 4 스테이션 아이디에서 채널 4의 모듈 타이포그래피 특징들이 많이 보인다. 아이콘 ‘4’는 돌, 건물, 빛 등의 자연적 환경과 인위적 환경으로부터 소재를 갖고 온다. 이 논문에서는 채널 4의 역사, 첫 번째 스테이션 아이디와 그 이후 채널 4의 스테이션 아이디들에 적용된 모듈방식에 대한 시각적인 묘사가 포함되어 있다. British TV Channel 4 is one of the famous TV Channel in the world. Its station ID has also played a leading role in the developments of Motion Graphics including station IDs. This station ID’s main visual design concept is its name and an iconic logo ‘4’ at the same time. The first channel 4 station ID was designed by using modular typography to construct the iconic "4". Modular typography is a technique of creating letters with similar elements. Channel 4"s station ID was constructed from coloured polygons. The polygons split and converge at the same point in 3D space. Modularity in Channel 4"s station ID is evidenced by the similar units of polygons. After the first station ID, Channel 4 was re-branded. Eventhough the station IDs which followed did not use coloured and geometrical polygons, modularity is seen in most of the station IDs especially between 2004 - 2011. In these station IDs, the iconic "4" is formed from similar natural and environmental objects like rocks, buildings, lights etc. In this analysis paper, there is a visual narrative on the history of Channel 4, the concept of modular typography in the original station ID and the application of modular typography in other Channel 4"s station IDs.
