        Finite Step Method for the Constrained Optimization Problem in Phase Contrast Microscopic Image Restoration

        The aim of microscopic image restoration is to recover the image by applying the inverse process of degradation, and the results facilitate automated and improved analysis of the image. In this work, we consider the problem of image restoration as a minimization problem of convex cost function, which consists of a least-squares fitting term and regularization terms with non-negative constraints. The finite step method is proposed to solve this constrained convex optimization problem. We demonstrate the convergence of this method. Efficiency and restoration capability of the proposed method were tested and illustrated through numerical experiments.

        Comparison of Active Contour and Active Shape Approaches for Corpus Callosum Segmentation

        The corpus callosum is the largest connective structure in the brain, and its shape and size are correlated to sex, age, brain growth and degeneration, handedness, musical ability, and neurological diseases. Manually segmenting the corpus callosum from brain magnetic resonance (MR) image is time consuming, error prone, and operator dependent. In this paper, two semi-automatic segmentation methods are present: the active contour model-based approach and the active shape model-based approach. We tested these methods on an MR image of the human brain and found that the active contour approach had better segmentation accuracy but was slower than the active shape approach.

        Survey of Mongolian Oil Reserve

        Geological investigation and the researches of petroleum in territory of our country were intensively developed in 1940 years. Since 1960 years, the research stopped for 30 years and the new stage of rise of development began since 1990. Our country in difficult economic conditions supports the foreign investment in geological investigation of our petroleum and conclusion of a bilateral sharing of production. Today, is revealed as a whole 220,000 km2 of oil area, which is divided into 24 platforms. As the most perspective areas our experts consider deposits Tamsagbulag and ZuunBayan. On accounts of the USA scientists and experts the effective resource of petroleum of our country from 95 % by probability is estimated in 350 million barrels, from which the deposit Tamsagbulag is estimated in 50-60 million barrels. However, it is necessary to note that for today we have only assumptions in an estimation of the sizes of our petroleum resource. In the future before us there is a purpose of intensive study of a large deposit of petroleum in territory of our country, as exact resources of deposits of the Mongolian petroleum till now are not determined. 석유를 위한 몽골에서의 지질학적 조사 및 연구는 1940년대에 집중적으로 수행되었다. 1960년대부터 30년 동안 그러한 활동은 중단되었다가 1990년부터 다시 시작되었다. 어려운 경제 여건에 있는 몽골은 석유를 위한 지질학적 조사를 적극 지원하고 있으며, 생산된 석유의 합리적인 분배를 포함하는 계약 체결도 적극 지원하고 있다. 현재, 220,000 km2가 석유 개발 가능 지역으로 밝혀졌으며, 24개 소구역으로 나뉘어져 있다. 이들 중 가장 유망한 지역은 탐삭불락 지역과 주운바얀 지역이다. 미국의 전문가들은 몽골의 가채 석유 매장량을 3억 5천만 배럴로 추산하고 있는데, 그 중 5천만~6천만 배럴을 탐삭불락 지역의 것으로 추산하고 있다. 지금까지의 몽골의 석유 매장량은 추정량일 뿐이기 때문에, 앞으로 가채 매장량을 더 정확히 추정하고 또한 더 큰 석유 부존 구조를 찾기 위한 광범위한 연구가 필요하다.

        몽골의 주운바얀 산 석유의 주성분의 구조특성연구에의 13C과 1H 핵자기공명(NMR) 분광분석의 적용

        Several studies on physical, chemical and compositional characteristics of Mongolian oils were earlier conducted. But, the NMR spectroscopic analyses of most perspective oils of Tamsagbulag and Zuunbayan deposits were not carried out till now. This paper presents the results of 13C and 1H NMR spectroscopic analyses of the structure of main fractions of Zuunbayan oil (Southeast of Mongolia). The Zuunbayan oil is characterized by high composition ratio of paraffins and low concentration ratio of arenes. It is interesting to note that small amount of olefins was detected in the all oil fractions and has to be studied furthermore in the near future. 몽골에서 생산되는 석유에 대한 물리적, 화학적 연구 및 탄화수소의 구성(성분)특성에 대한 연구는 이미 수행된 바 있다. 그러나, 현재까지 탐삭불락과 주운바얀 유전에서 생산되는 가장 유망한 석유에 대한 핵자기공명 분광분석은 수행된 바 없다. 이 논문은 몽골 동남부의 주운바얀 유전 산 석유의 주성분의 구조특성에 대한 13C과 1H 핵자기공명(NMR) 분광분석의 결과를 제시한다. 분석 결과, 구성성분으로는 파라핀(paraffin)의 함유 비율이 높고, 아렌(arenas)의 함유 비율이 낮다는 특성이 있었다. 특기할 만한 것은 모든 시료에서 약간의 올레핀(olefin)이 검출되었다는 것인데, 이것은 앞으로 더 연구되어야 할 것이다.

      • Cell Segmentation in Phase Contrast Microscopy by Constrained Optimization

        <P>Utilization of automatic cell segmentation process is difficult to identify in a cell due to halo and shade-off distortions when observing the phase contrast microscopy images. Therefore, it is an important step to restore artifact-free images made ready for segmentation process. The main focus of this paper is to define a gradient projection algorithm to restore images based on the minimization problem of quadratic objective function with non-negative constraints. The proposed algorithm converges to a global minimum solution independent on initialization. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm can restore artifact-free images, which could produce high quality segmentation results using a simple thresholding method.</P>

      • The Evaluation of Pancreatic Enzyme Replacement Therapy for Chronic Pancreatitis Patients

        Aims: Non-invasive tests are not widely used in clinical practice for a reliable determination of the pancreas exocrine function. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) on the pancreas exocrine function of patients with chronic pancreatitis with the help of a fecal elastase 1 test. Methods: Observational cross-sectional study. 109 patients with chronic pancreatitis were treated using enzyme replacement therapy. Before and after the treatment all patients had gone through laboratory tests and imaging diagnosis. Results: There were 62 men and 47 women in our sample. The mean age was 49.76 ± 1.21 years (22 to 81). We determined the fecal elastase (200 mcg/g) for 70 patients (mean 151,33 ± 14.24 mcg/g). Among 39 patients, an exocrine pancreatic insufficiency was found severe (n = 24), and moderate (n = 15). After the PERT we observed a decrease in abdominal pain among the patients (P =0.0063) and decrease in urine amylase levels: 274.29 ± 46.72 ME/l and 167.25 ± 14.09 ME/ l; P =0.0128 and blood amylase levels: 74.38 ± 9.66 ME/l and 64.12 ±7.87 ME/l (n=89, P =0.043). Average fecal elastase levels in case of consuming capsules was reliably less compared to the initial levels: 279.46 ± 27.41 mcg/g and 254.87 ± 26.74 mcg/g (n=52, P =0.0152); and reliably less than elastase levels during the intake of pancreatin tablets: 289.38 ± 38.44 and 303.75 ± 36.88 mcg/g (n=24, P =0.0127). Fecal elastase activity during tablet pancreatin didn’t differ much from the initial levels: 276.14 ± 29.41 and 266.29 ± 29.74 mcg/g (n=35, P =0.4190). Conclusions: Determination of fecal elastase-1 is highly sensitive to the diagnosis of severe and moderate exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and the results of this test are not affected by ongoing PERT.

        Contrast Enhancement for Segmentation of Hippocampus on Brain MR Images

        An image segmentation result depends on pre-processing steps such as contrast enhancement, edge detection, and smooth filtering etc. Especially medical images are low contrast and contain some noises. Therefore, the contrast enhancement and noise removal techniques are required in the pre-processing. In this study, we present an extension by a novel histogram equalization in which both local and global contrast is enhanced using neighborhood metrics. When checking neighborhood information, filters can simultaneously improve image quality. Most important is that original image information can be used for both global brightness preserving and local contrast enhancement, and image quality improvement filtering. Our experiments confirmed that the proposed method is more effective than other similar techniques reported previously.

        A MULTIPHASE LEVEL SET FRAMEWORK FOR IMAGE SEGMENTATION USING GLOBAL AND LOCAL IMAGE FITTING ENERGY

        Segmenting the image into multiple regions is at the core of image processing. Many segmentation formulations of an images with multiple regions have been suggested over the years. We consider segmentation algorithm based on the multi-phase level set method in this work. Proposed method gives the best result upon other methods found in the references. Moreover it can segment images with intensity inhomogeneity and have multiple junction. We extend our method (GLIF) in [T. Dultuya, and M. Kang, Segmentation with shape prior using global and local image fitting energy, J.KSIAM Vol.18, No.3, 225–244, 2014.] using a multiphase level set formulation to segment images with multiple regions and junction. We test our method on different images and compare the method to other existing methods.
