Acorn Production and Seedling Emergence of Quercus acuta in Wando, Jeonnam Province

Acorn production and seedling emergence of Quercus acuta in stand level were estimated in natural Q. acuta stand, thinned Q. acuta stand, Pinus densiflora-Q. acuta mixed stand and Pinus taeda plantation in Wando, Jeonnam Province. Seed traps and small plots (5m 5m) were established in each stand to investigate acorn production and seedling emergence from 2000 to 2003. In all study sites, acorns were produced every year but a very large crop is recorded in 2003. Acorn production showed similar year-to-year masting patterns in all study sites. Mean annual acorn production was largest in natural Q. acuta stand. Acorns fell from August to December in thinned Q. acuta stands, while those mainly did from September to October in the other stands. Seedling emergence was highest in thinned Q. acuta stand, particularly in the plot where relative light intensity was high, indicating that relative light intensity stimulates seedling emergence. Seedling emergence was also affected by acorn production in previous year.
