'Bleak Night' is a movie about a boy who ended up being dead, and it effectivly delivers its theme 'understanding,' by utilizing a falshback technique, which is commonly used in many movies. However, as the movie intends to avoid a typical use of flashbacks, I would rather call it 'retrospection' technique in this paper, instead. The boy revives many times in the movie, and we get to know his hidden stories through his revivals. Broken pieces of memories have a real meaning after collected together. This manuscript will take a look at where these retrospections are from, what are brought back, who reproduce them, and what are earned from them. Based on such anlaysis, this paper will expalin what restrospections mean in 'Bleak Night' and what effects they create as a movie. 영화 <파수꾼>은 죽어버린 한 소년에 대한 이야기다. 영화는 플래시백이라 일컫는 매우 일반적인 영화적 장치를 활용해 ‘이해’ 라는 영화의 주제를 효과적으로 전달한다. 본고에서 플래시백이라는 일반적 기표 대신 회상이라는 기표를 활용한 이유는 <파수꾼>에서 의도적으로 기피하고 있는 플래시백의 약호적 특질을 살펴볼 수 있기 때문이다. 영화는 다양한 회상으로 소년을 되살린다. 우리는 회생하는 소년을 통해 알지 못했던 소년의 이야기를 알게 된다. 조각났던 기억은 모두 모이고서야 제대로 된 의미를 찾는다. 본고는 <파수꾼>의 근간을 이루는 이러한 회상이 어떤 이유에서 비롯되고, 그 속에서 되살려지는 내용은 무엇이며, 누구에 의해 재현 되는지, 또 회상을 통해 얻어지는 것은 무엇인지 살펴볼 것이다. 이러한 분석을 통해 <파수꾼>에서 회상이 갖는 의미는 무엇인지 그것이 영화적으로 어떤 효과를 발휘했는지 알아보고자 한다.
