Recently, the size of schools and the number of its classes are continuously on the decrease because of the decreased number of school age children due to the decrease in general population and the increased price of lands in downtown areas. There are 95 small sized elementary schools within the city limit of Seoul. By the definition, the small sized elementary school is a school which lacks or recently reduce the amount of outdoor spaces. This study has examined the usage of outdoor spaces in small sized elementary schools in Seoul. The results shows that the playing field area, one of the outdoor spaces, also include space for other activities, thus causing problems such as the size of paying field being reduced and the learning activities being modified or eliminated. Therefore, this study suggests the space for learning activity plan that utilizes the inside of the playing field and the inside of the education building, not the boundary of a playing field, as the space for learning activities and for the secured space for palying fields in small sized elementary schools.
