<취유부벽정기>는 현전하는「금오신화」오편 중에서 신선 지향적 원망을 가장 뚜렷하게 표현한 작품이니 작품의 주인공 홍생이 선계의 여인과 만나 풍류를 즐긴 후 신선으로 화하였음을 시사하는 내용이다. <취유부벽정기>는 <취>에서 홍생이 기씨조선의 왕녀였던 신선을 만나고 나서 술을 대접받고 얼마 후에 선화했다는 작품내용에 미루어볼 때 우리나라 상고시대의 신선설화가 작품형성의 모티브로써 작용할 가능성이 있다. <취>는 고조선, 기자조선, 고구려 시대의 유적이 산재하고 있는 평양을 배경으로 하였다. 이곳에서 주인공 홍생은 지난날 민족사의 장을 펼쳤던 고도에 대한 회고의 감상에 사로잡히게 되는데 여기에 문득 선화된 기씨왕녀가 나타나 먼 옛날 역사의 현장을 재인식시켜 줌으로써 회고에 대한 감상은 낭만적인 선계동경으로까지 이어진다. 그 역사적 현장은 선인사상을 지니고 살았던 민족의 자취를 드러내 보인 것이었으며 선인들이 통치하던 평화로운 나라에 대한 향수라고 할 수 있다.

While Huh-Gyun's novels in Hanmun(i.e, the Chinese language) deal with extraordinary characters who have distinguished ability, in his Hong-Gil-Dong-Jeon, the novel in the Korean Language, the pratagonist turns out to be a hero who is not a hermit, but comes out in the secular world and tries to reform the then absurd society and realise his political ambition by exercising his superhuman ability. In Hong-Gil-Dong-Jeon, Huh-Gyun involves compositely all the elements of his earlier Human novels. Huh-Gyun changed the extraordinary man into a hero. Since that extraordinary man becomes a hero, the hero image of Hong-Gil-Dong with his Do-Sul(i.e, Taoistic magical power) has to be described. We can see Hong-Gil-Dong break through various crises by his magical methods. In fact there were many stories about Do-Sul abundantly in Huh-Gyun's age, and people regarded such magic as a required skill of the extraordinary man. Not only Huh-Gyun but also his contemporary Sa-Dae-Bu (i.e, the civilians of Lee Dynasty) recogniged Do-Sul as an actual beat, and we can not find frequently those folk tales about that extraordinary man in Ya-Dam and Confusian's writings collected at that time. At any rate, the characters of Huh-Gyun's novels can be regarded as fictionalized characters who existed actually in history and in Hong-Gil-Dong-Jon that is supposed to be written in Korean Huh-Gyun created an image of a hero more unreal and fantastic than in his earlier Hanmun novels.
