In this work, an effort is made to investigate the behavior of a chip, from its initial flow to its final breaking stage. The expression for chip flow in grooved tools is verified analytically using FEM. Cutting parameters like velocity and depth of cut have a profound influence on chip flow behavior. Chip curling increases and, for a given tool geometry, effectiveness of the groove increases with increasing depth of cut. The feasibility of tool design using FEM simulations is also demonstrated. Optimization of tool geometry results in better chip control.

This paper is experimental study of machining characteristics about martensitic heat resisting steel STR11. Machining characteristics are different according to internal quality(chemical compositions, microscopic structure and nonetallic inclusion), mechanicla properties (tensile strength value, impact value and hardness) and dynamic cutting force Following are the results; 1. In analyzing internal quality, test materials have typical martensite structure and a minute needle-shaped structure. 2. Tensile strength and reduction of area and hardness are larger. But, valucs of elongation and impact values are smaller. Fracture surface of tensile specimen is duchile. 3. Cutting force is decreasing with cutting speed increasing. 4. Cutting force is increasing with feed speed increasing.

This study carried out a cutting experiment on Duralumin A16061-T6, which is light but strong and highly anticorrosive, so recently popular as a lightweight material, by changing cutting conditions and alternating 4 insert tips, and examined the effect of each insert tip on cutting force at certain cutting conditions, the measurements of the coarseness of processed surfaces roughness, and the chip workability.The following conclusions were drawn from the results. Cutting force for cutting tool is when insert tips were alternated at each cutting condition, the cutting force of cutting tools was highest when CBN tools were used, next by Ceramic tools, Cermet tools, and WC tools. Therefore, WC tools are considered most suitable for cutting Duralumin A16061-T6.Surface roughness as for the coarseness of surfaces according to insert tips applied to Duralumin A16061-T6 under the cutting condition of depth of cut below 1mm, feed rate below 0.24mm/rev and cutting speed over 100m/min, the coarseness of material surface roghness appeared to be finest when WC tools were used, next by Ceramic tools, Cermet tools, and CBN tools.
