Background : Hepaitis A virus(HAV) infection occurs commonly during early childhood. Recent improvements in sanitation and hygiene have resulted in a decrease in HAV infection among children, while the clinical illness of hepatitis A and prevalence of antibody to HAV(anti-HAV IgG) have been increased, particularly in the 3rd decade of young male adults. We studied a seroepidemiology of anti-HAV IgG in combat policemen who were living together during their service in the combat police force. Methods : We measured anti-HAV IgG(HAVAB, Abbott) from 1,009 healthy subjects with no history of transfusion of any blood products during the last 6 months. The mean age was 20.8 years. Results : Overall, anti-HAV IgG was detected in 30.2% of study subjects. According to age, the positive rates of antibody were 15.7%, 25.9%, 31.5%, 38.1%, 43.5%, and 50.0% in 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24 years respectively. The positive rates of anti-HAV IgG as to period of service were 17.3%, 28.1%, 40.9% in 0 month, 1-12 months, 13-24 months respectively. The positive rates of anti-HAV IgG were 27.0% in the urban group, 39.8% in the rural group. Conclusion : The positive rates of anti-HAV IgG in our data low compared with those of previous reports. We think that group living condition such as living in dormitories or barracks can be a risk factors for hepatitis A infection and that improvements to the sanitary system and active immunization would be necessary for prevention of it.(Korean J Med 57:988-993, 1999)

With the help of nanoscale materials like carbon nanotube (CNT), there is the potential to develop new actuators that will provide higher work per cycle than previous actuator technologies, and generate much higher mechanical strength. In this study, the electrochemical actuation characteristics of nano carbon films were experimentally studied to develop electrochemical actuators. The electrochemical actuators were composed of aqueous NaCl electrolyte and their actuating electrodes were made of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/polystyrene composite and graphene respectably. Actuation is proportional to charging transfer rate, and the electrolysis with an AC voltage input has very complex characteristics. To quantify the actuation property, the strain responses and output model were studied based on electrochemical effects between the nano carbon films and the electrolyte.

This papers presents multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) based nano composites and their characteristics to develop a smart material having piezoresistivity for strain sensing. 0.5, 2, 3 and 10 wt% MWCNT / epoxy composites were fabricated and electrical conductivity was obtained from 0.5 wt%. The resistance change of the composites was measured with respect to the change of strain and the gauge factors of the composite were derived and were compared with others. It is deduced that the largest contribution of piezoresistivity of the composite comes from slippage of overlaying or bundled MWCNT in the matrix from a macroscopic standpoint.

In addition to age, white cell count and immunophenotype, karyotype has been reported to be one of the important prognostic factors in acute lymphocytic leukemias. Furthermore 70 percent of patients with acute B lymphocytic leukemia presented chromosomal abnormalities, which is known to have a close relationship with the prognosis. Among the abnormalities, triploid is rare and known to have the worse prognosis. Structural chromosomal abnormality of the 11q23 band is more common in childhood acute lymphocytic leukemia and has been rarely reported in adult lymphocytic leukemia. We present a case of a 29 year - old male patient with acute lymphocytic leukemia, who had triploid and chromosomal translocation including 11q23 band along with the review of related literature.(Korean J Med 61:190-194, 2001)

Butt-rot fungi were isolated from decayed portion in butt rotted larch trees[Larix leptolepis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Gord.]. From a total of 216 affected trees in 38 forests of five provinces, Sparassis crispa(Wulf. ex Fr.) Fr. was isolated with the highest frequency, i.e.. 28% of the total trees. Laetiporus sulphureus (Fr.) Bond. et Sing, with 19%. and Phaeolus schweinitzii(Fr.) Pat. with 8%. However, none of these fungi was isolated from 45% of the trees. Wood decaying abilities and interaction of four basidiomycetous and three non-basidiomyo:etous fungi isolated from butt rotted trees were investigated. The weight loss of larch wood blocks, when exposed to the culture of a fungus for six months, was 19.6% for P. schweinitzii, 10% for S. crispa, 8.2% for L. sulphurous, 5.1% for Coriolus hirsutus, and less than 4.4 o for three non-basidiomycetous fungi. In incubation with combinations of the fungi, the wood decay activity of S. crispa, L. sulphurous and C. hirsutus was increased by the non-basidiomycetous fungi of Geotrichum candidium, G. sp. and Verticillium sp., but that of P. schweinitzii was not.

In this study, a carbon nanotube (CNT) flexible strain sensor was fabricated with CNT based epoxy and rubber composites for tactile sensing. The flexible strain sensor can be fabricated as a long fibrous sensor and it also may be able to measure large deformation and contact information on a structure. The long and flexible sensor can be considered to be a continuous sensor like a dendrite of a neuron in the human body and we named the sensor as a biomimetic artificial neuron. For the application of the neuron in biomimetic engineering, an ANMS (Artificial Neuron Matrix System) was developed by means of the array of the neurons with a signal processing system. Moreover, a strain positioning algorithm was also developed to find localized tactile information of the ANMS with Labview for the application of an artificial e-skin.

Eyelid tumors, including metastatic lid tumors, present clinically as recurrent chalazia, multicentric nodules, ulcerated lesions, diffuse swelling, or chronic blepharoconjuntivitis. Lid tumors consist of benign lesions(69%) and malignant lesions(31%). Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma account for 92% of the malignant lesions. Metastatic lid disease was found to be of rare occurence, accounting for 0.1% of all lid lesions and 0.3% of malignant lid lesions. We report a case of metastatic lid carcinoma of stomach cancer. A60-year-old man developed a painless, slow-growing nodular lesion of his right lower eyelid. Excisional biopsy revealed metastatic undifferentiated adenocarcinoma. We believe this is the first case in Korean literature.
