Experimental studies have been made on the changes of the tissue mast cells of respiratory organs in relation to inhaled anesthesia. Animals used in these experiments were healthy male rats weighing from 120 to 130 gm. Rats were anesthetized with Ether and Fluothane and divided into two groups according to the duration of anesthesia, 5 min. & 30 minutes groups. One group anesthetizing for 5 minutes was slaughtered immediately after the anesthesia and 5 min., 10 min., 15 min., 30 min,, 1 hour, 3 hrs, 5 hrs, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, and 48 hrs after the anesthesia. The other anesthetizing for 30 min. was sacrificed right after the anesthesia and 10 min., 20 min., 30 min., 1 hour, 3 hrs, 5 hrs, 12 hrs, 24 hrs and 48 hrs after the anesthsia. The observation of mast cells of mucous membrane in such organs as nose, trachea and lungs Leads to the following conclusions. 1. Ether anesthesia for 5 minutes is associated with the decrease in the number of mast cells in various organs, nasal and tracheal mucosa and lungs after the aneathesia, reaches minimum value soon after the anesthesia in lungs, at 10 min. in trachea and at 30 min. in nose, respectively, and thereafter, increases gradually to approach their normal population at 24 hours. 2. In cases anesthetized with Fluothane for 5 minutes, the decrease in number of the mast cells in various organs has observed and that is the minimum value in this experiment, and thenceforth reaches to the original status. 3. When the rats were anesthetized with Ether for 30 minutes, the total number of tissue mast cells in nasal and tracheal mucous membrane shows a temporary increase but acute decrease in lungs. Two formers return to the original status and latter keeps continuous decreasing. 4. In the group anesthetized with Fluothane for 30 minutes, the similar results are obtained as in the previous group with Ether anesthesia, that is, the total number of the mast cells in the nasal and tracheal mucous membrane increasing temporarily soon after anesthesia return gradually to control status at 24 hours, on the other hand, that of the lungs shows remarkable decrease and worse continuously. 5. There seems to be no any definite tendency of change regarding to the kinds and duration of anesthesia in percentages of normal type and diffuse type to the total number of mast cells in the nasal mucous membrane. But, when the total numbers of tissue mast cells of trachea and lungs were increased, the percentage of normal type of mast cellls was increased than that of control group while percentage of diffuse type was decreased. On the other hand, when the total numbers of tissue mast cells were decreased, the percentage of the formers decreased and that of the ratters increased. 6. Although there are some differences in effect to the mast cells according to the kinds of anesthetic agents, either Ether or Fluothane, in short duration anesthesia, those in the cases with long period of anesthesia tends to be influenced to the length of time rather than the properties of anesthetic agents.
