In general, those who study the political conditions in late Koryo have a tendency to understand it in a viewpoint of confrontation of the powerful families and the Literati. It is, however, necessary to investigate the political standpoints of bureaucrats individually. Because we can understand the meaning of political conditions in that way. Therefore, in this paper, I tried to investigate the political standpoints of the professors of Songgyun-gwan (the national confucian academy) who were scolar-bureaucrats as a n대-Confucianst. In conclusion, their political standpoints based on the background of their families and the political idea of neo-Confucianism. So that they were divided in political matters in late Koryo.

In general, those who study the period of Koryo dynasty have a tendency to neglect the influence that military commanders had on King Kongmin's Regime. It is, however, necessary to examine the process of the increase of military power during is Regin. So that we can understand the historical meaning of political condition in those days. I an interested in the political power of military commanders as a way of finding out the background of political conditions of King Kongmin's time. Therefore, in this article, I tried to investigate the rise and fall of their power. King Kongmin attempted the social reform to correct the abuses for which the powerful families were responsible. His reforms had two facets : externally, a policy directed against Yuan, and internally, an attempt to supress the powerful families. The policies of course provoked a reaction from both Yuan and the powerful families. But he endeavored to undermine the dominant position of the powerful families through a variety of reforms. In the meantime, the power of the military leader stanted to grow in the first year of King Kongmin. They were promoted to the high-ranking position in the goverment as the conseqence of their victories in battles against so-called Red Turbans, a powerful brigand force of Chinese and japanese marauders. And an increase in their power had placed restraints on the exercise of the royal authority. Thus King Kongmin had Sin Ton carry out a political reform, and purged the powerful military commanders. But his attempt failed and the military his attempt failed and the military leaders were restored to their old position. In conclusion, though military commanders protected the royal authority from the interference of Yuan and the raids of foreign enimies, they also undermined King's Power. So long as the political unrest continued, they could exercice a strong influence on the political conditions. Thus, from the assasination of King Kongmin to the downfall of Koryo dynasty, the conservative military commanders had been in confrontation with the new literati who were scholar - bureaucrats in carrying out foreign policy and reforms.

In general, the mountain names largely have not been recorded on the historical documents, excepting secial mountains. we do not know, therefore, the origins of mountain names today. But it is important for understanding a local history to study the origin of place name, including the mountain name. In this paper, I tried to investigate the origin of the mountain name of Odung(Fish Climbing), which is located in Kwangsan district. As a result of it, I could find out some facts. Those are as follows. First, the cult of Dragon had been rooted in the agricultural districts at that time. But it was merged in Buddhism, or the cult of Maitreya, as Buddhism was introduced into there. In consequence of this, that populace had to have a way of Buddhistic thinking. Secondly, according to the Samgukyusa, a thirteen-century compilation by the Buddhistic monk Iryon, the mountain name of Manosan(Ten Thousend Fishes Mountain) located in Milyang had been originated from Mayasa in a Buddhistic sutra, which means the fish in Sanskrit. In conclusion, the mountain name of Odung had been creatured during Packche Kingdom period, of which the name is originated from a Buddhistic sutra.

Throughout the Koryo Dynasty, Hyangli, or the local officer, played an important social functions. Therefore, looking into their socio-economic, and military roles would be significant for understanding the character of Koryo society. The main point of this article is focused on the inter connection between their military duties and economic benefit. The coming out of the research showed several interesting facts as follows. First, their hereditary duties as low-ranking-officer was originated from King Taejo's allied forces, which consisted of private soldiers belong to Hojok, namely local influential family. Second, it began to disorganize with the reformation of military system by King Taejo's successors and consequenely Hojok's private soldiers, mainly farmers, was enlisted in Kwang-gun, the first nation-wide military organization which was established in King Jeongjong period. Third, the cahracteristic as an Allied Armies by Hojok disappeard during the period of Jeongjong to Seongjong regin in the process of reforming military system. Forth, eventually Hojok, or Hyangli, was enlisted as low-ranking-officer in chuhyun-gun, the provincial army substituted for Kwang-gun. Fifth, hereditary duties as low-ranking-officer of Hyangli was also due to the benefit of gainning of land. In conclusion, particularly Hyangli's role as military officer was significant because of the aspects in economic role.

I think the Cho Ban's incident is important to understand the factor of the downfall of the Koryo dynasty. But in general those who study the political condition in late Koryo have a tendency to understand superficially it in a viewpoint of the disseizin of powerful officials. It is, therefore, necessary to investigate the political stands of the bureaucrats related to it. Because we can grasp the real political character of it only in that way. Yom hung-bang, as a civil official, attained a position of influence on the powerful lineage background. What is more, he possessed vast estate and many slaves, so that he acquired greate economic power. Choe Yong, as a military official, won advancement through his success in the numerous battles of his days. He played a major role in repulsing the attacks of the Red turban bandits and Japanese marauders. As a matter of fact, his authority as a military commander relied on his private soldiery. On the other hand, he ousted his adversary in the struggle for power among the military commanders. After ousting Chi Yun and Yang Baek- Yon, he was going to get rid of as well Yom Hung-Bang and Im Gyon-Mi who come into antagonism with him. He could eliminate them on occasion Cho Ban's incident at last. Cho Ban, an official of the Royal Secretariat, who had been deprived his estate by Yom Hung-Bang consulted with Choe Yong to eliminate them and brought about that incident. In conclusion Cho Ban's incident actually occurred on the struggle for seizing political power among the military commanders and some powerful civil officials. Accordingly in this context we have to understand the factor of the downfall of the Koryo dynasty.

The political system which had been established during king Hyun-jong’s reign influenced, in manyways, the politics throughout koryo dynasty. I have early took an interest in the political powers as a background of that political conditions. Therefore, in this article, I investigated the process of the succession to the throne of king Hyun-jong, his position in Royal family, and the political powers which enthroned him through the Kang-jo’s Coupd'etat. As a result of it, several facts of political State in those days : first, the succession to the throne of King Hyun-jong was accomplished on the support of the line of Queen consort Shin-seong, who is King Tae-jo's fifth queen consort, come from Kyung-ju, and of the line of the bureaucrats as Confucian ; second, Kang-jo's Coupt'etat took place in the condition that Kang-jo's powers was in the Court, and that the bureaucrats anted to enthrone King Hyun-jong as new king because of King Mock-jong's misgovernment and Kim-chiyang's intrique; third, after King Hyun-jon's accession to the throne, two groups, or such the bureaucrats as Choi-Hang, Che-choongsoon, and such military commanders as Kang-jo, took the political initiative ; fourth, Kang-jo's group being purged, such confucian bureaucrats as Choi-hang, Che-choonsoon, who passed examination, and such professional bureancrats as Che-sawi, who rose in rank from low-rank office, took the political initiative. In conclusion, the political leading powers under the reign of King Hyun-jong should be not classified with the regional background, but with the official Career.

In this paper, a series of centrifuge tests were performed to evaluate the seepage characteristic of reinforced embankment. The centrifuge models simulated an actual embankment reinforced by enlargement of levee cross-section. The centrifuge models have the same conditions except the locations of enlargement with low permeable material : water-side and land-side. In addition, the prototype embankment is constructed on low permeable clay layer. In the case of water-side reinforcement, the reinforced zone makes water head down and the saturated zone of embankment propagates slowly. In the case of land-side reinforcement embankment, the saturated zone enlarged relatively faster but the amount of exit water at land-side toe was very small because of the land-side reinforcement zone. The low permeable clay foundation layer was being continuously saturated by the inflow from the embankment as well as the uplift flow from the permeable layer induced by the excess pore water pressure.

高麗 閑人에 대한 再考察

The essential meanings of the Han-In in the Koryo Dynasty has not been yet clear despite of some studies of scholars ; that is, the conclusion of it was not single because of their varied opinions. Therefore, this paper was intended to solve three problems of the Han-In : the background of the appearance of Han-In, their social position, and the character of Han-In-Chun, namely, the land granted to the Han-In. As a result of this reconsideration, I could newly understand the real condition of it. First, Han-In had appeared in the process of distributing land to the officials, in lack of land, in the period of King Deok-jong. Second, they were a sort of reserved officials who had been given the Dong-Jeong-Jik, namely, an official post with only a title. Third, Han-In-Chun was the land which had been gived to them for the sake of their military role, and of the support to their sons not to be appointed official post and unmarried daughters. In conclusion, Han-In was not a social class, but a reserved officials who appeared through the policy of favorable treatment for the official class, in lack of land, in Koryo-Dynasty. Especially, among them, the reserved officialls of low position were designated as a Han-In.
