Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of serum lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) in the evaluation of risk factor of coronary artery diease. Methods: We evaluated 32 patients with coronary artery diease(CAD) and 30 normal subjects between October 1991 and March 1992. Serum Lp(a) was measured by ELISA (Immunozym Lp(a). Immuno Co.) and other lipid profiles by conventional methods. Results: Compared with 30 normal subjects, systolic BP(136.8±27.0 vs. 121.0±16.9 mmHg), diastolic BP(86.1±15.2 vs. 79.5±10.6 mmHg), mean BP(103.0±18.1 vs. 93.4±11.7 mmHg), and BMI(23.7±3.1 vs. 21.5±2.5Kg/M²) were elevated in patients with CAD (p<0.05). In CAD group, 16(50%) hypertention, 6 (28%) were diabetes, 5 (15.6%) obesty, 22(68.8%) had a history of smoking, and 12 (37.5%) alcohol among these patients. The level of Lp(a) of the CAD group was higher than that of the control group(22.4±17.8 vs. 11.3±13.0mg/dl, p<0.01). The level of HDL·C of the CAD was lower than that of the control(36.8±7.6 vs. 45.0±16.3mg/dl, p<0.05). Total cholestero, triglyceride and LDI·C were not significantly different between CAD and control group. Conclusion: These results suggests that the elevated Lp(a) level may be an another risk factor of CAD.
