영화의 시각적 언어로써 색채는 가장 직관적인 요소일 뿐만 아니라, 시각적 충격과 예술적 감화력을 만드는데 있어서 중요한 요소이다. 영화는 색상마다 상징적 의미와 은유성이 풍부해 언어로 설명하기 어려운 '언어 외의 의미'를 표현할 수 있다. 이 때문에 색채를 활용한 대조와 조화는 영화의 감정과 주제를 부각시키는 데 있어 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 색채는 지역마다 독특한 문화가 축적되어 각자의 색채 문화를 가지고 있다. 색에 대한 다른 문화적 미적 감각과 경험이 지역의 문화적 특색을 부각시키는데 있어서 중요한 요소로 작용하기도 한다. 장이머우감독은 색채를 활용하여 중국의 민족적 특색을 강하게 표현하는 대표적인 감독 중의 한 명이다. 그의 작품 중에서 영화 ‘홍등’에서 보여지는 빨간색과 흰색이 지니고 있는 스토리에서의 상징성을 분석하여 영화 제작에 있어서 다양한 색채 활용 방식을 제안하고자 한다. 본 연구를 위하여 우선 색채에 대한 보편적 상징성을 고찰하고 영화 ‘홍등’에서 분석된 색채 상징성과 비교 분석을 하고자 한다. 이를 통해서 보편적인 색채 상징성이 지역에 따라서 또는 창작자에 따라서 어떻게 변용되는지를 고찰하고자 한다. 이러한 연구를 통해 색채 상징성에 대한 활용을 창조적으로 확장시킬 수 있는 가능성에 대하여 제안하며 영화 제작자들에게 의미있는 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다. Color, as a visual language, is not only the most intuitive element of film, but it is also a significant factor in shaping its visual effect and aesthetic impact. Each colour in a film is rich in symbolism and metaphor, and can represent extra-linguistic connotations that are difficult to explain in words. In terms of colour, each region has developed a distinct culture, complete with its own colour culture. Other cultural aesthetic senses and colour sensations play a significant part in high lighting a region's cultural features. Director Zhang Yimou is one of the most representative directors of the use of colour in the presentation of Chinese national identity. In his work, he analyses the significance in the tale of red and white in the film Raise the Red Lantern and provides a flexible technique of combining numerous colours in cinema production. The universal symbolism of colour is first investigated and compared to the symbolism of colour examined in the film Raise the Red Lantern for the objectives of this research. It will be investigated how the universal significance of colour differs depending on geography or creator. The idea of artistically increasing the use of colour symbolism is proposed in this study, with the expectation that it would be used as significant material by filmmakers.
