노블 부인(Mattie Wilcox Noble)의 선교활동과 사회관계망

이 논문은 노블 부인(Mattie Wilcox Noble, 1872-1956)이 선교현장에서 형성한 사회관계망을 탐구하는데 목적이 있다. 노블 부인은 1892년 6월 노블(William Arthur Noble, 1866-1945) 선교사와 결혼한 직후 고향 펜실베니아 윌크스배러(Wilkes-Barre)를 떠나 1892년 10월 한국에 도착했다. 1934년 한국을 떠날 때까지 전반기에는 평양을 중심으로 서북지방에서 선교활동을 전개하였고, 후반기에는 서울과 중부지방에서 활동했다. 노블 부인은 한국감리교회 최초로 체계적인 여자사경회를 시작했으며, 어린이주일학교와 영아부를 독자적으로 조직했다. 노블 부인은 42년간의 한국생활을 기록으로 남겨놓았는데, 특히 자신의 가정에서 이루어진 만남과 사역에 대해서 기록하며 수많은 사람들과의 관계에 대해 세밀하고 솔직하게 소회까지 밝히고 있어 그의 사회 관계망을 해명할 수 있도록 도와주었다. 노블 부인은 일차적 사회관계망인 가족, 혈연 및 지연에 있어 매우 성공적인 관계를 형성하였다. 부부 관계, 자녀들의 성장과 성취 그리고 고향에 두고 온 혈연과 지연에 의한 정서적·물질적 후원은 40년 넘는 한국선교생활의 원동력이 되었다. 다음으로 노블 부인의 선교사 관계망은 선교사업을 추진하는 중요한 토대가 되었다. 선교사들은 가정의 대소사와 자녀교육, 생필품의 구입 등의 문제를 공동으로 해결하였고 미국의 국경일이나 교회 절기, 개인적인 기념일, 선교 상 주요한 행사 등을 함께 지키면서 정서적 유대를 공고히 해나갔다. 교파를 초월한 선교사간의 지지와 협력도 추구하였다. 그렇지만 선교사들의 선교사업이 유지되고 확산되는 통로는 한국인 관계망이었다. 노블 부인은 한국인 고용인, 남녀 장학생들을 통해 가정사, 개인적인 업무 그리고 선교사업에 이르기까지 도움을 받으면서 선교 사역의 효율성을 꾀할 수 있었다. 노블 부인의 전도부인들은 부부동역, 여성지도력의 발휘, 순행전도의 모범을 보이며 교회를 개척하고 여성들을 계몽하였다. 선교사를 영적인 부모로, 스승으로 여겼던 초기 한국기독교 지도자들은 선교사와의 밀접한 관계 속에서 선교사들에게 배운 복음과 선교관을 확산시켜 나갔으며, 복음을 전한 선교사와 이를 받아들인 한국인들은 상호작용을 통하여 변화되고 융화되었다. 이 논문은 노블 부인의 기록을 통해 그려지는 사회관계망을 통해 선교활동의 인적·물적 토대와 함께 선교사업의 계승과 확산의 구조를 확인할 수 있었다는 데 의미를 둘 수 있다. 어떻게 보면 무의미하고 중요하지 않은 것으로 여겨왔던 선교사 개인의 일상 속에 녹아 있는 사회관계망을 통해 선교 현장의 세밀화를 그려보는 것은 한국기독교의 정체성을 규명하기 위한 또 하나의 방법이 될 수 있을 것이라고 생각한다. This paper attempted to explore the social networks established by Mrs. Mattie Wilcox Noble(1872-1956) in the mission field. She married William Arthur Noble(1866-1945) in June in 1892 and left her hometown Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania to come to Seoul Korea in October in 1892. Until 1934 when they left Korea, Mr. and Mrs. Noble pioneered village churches in Pyeongyang and other northern region and worked as a supervisor in charge of Seoul and the central region of the country. She was the first to start a systemic women’s bible institute in Korean Methodist Church and organized children’s sunday school and cradle role department on her own. Mrs. Noble left her legacy, The Journals of Mattie Wilcox Noble, 1892-1934, which recorded 42 years of her stay in Korea. Her Journal, with describing many people minutely whom she met at her home as a missionary wife helps to define her networks. Mrs. Noble maintained her primary network successfully. Good marriage, achievements of her children and the material and spiritual support of blood relatives and acquaintances are the foundation of her mission works in a foreign land. The next foundation is the intimate relationship of missionaries each other. Missionaries worked on their family matters, children’s education and purchase of daily necessities, and observed American national holidays, church seasons, personal anniversaries and major mission events together with them beyond all denominations in order to build a emotional bond and cement their support while strengthening and passing on patriotism and American civic awareness. Mission works of Mrs. Noble could be sustained and spread through a network of Koreans. Mrs. Noble could handle household chores, personal works and missionary works with help of Korean employees and male and female scholarship students, and enhance the efficiency of her mission life. Bible women of Mrs. Noble played an exemplary role in terms of couple cooperation, woman’s leadership, and itineration for propagation of the Gospel, pioneered churches, and enlightened women. Early Korean Christian leaders who considered missionaries as their teacher and spiritual parents spread the gospel and their thoughts instructed from them through closely-knit relationships with missionaries. This paper holds significance in ascertaining the material bases, human resources and the expand mechanism of mission works through The Journals of Mattie Wilcox Noble, 1892-1934. Describing minutely the mission field could lead us to clarify further define the identity of Korean Christianity furtherly, with the social network formed in everyday life.
