Polarization Spectroscopy for the 85Rb D1 Line in a Strong Pump Field

We present polarization spectroscopy for the D1 transition line of 85Rb atoms in the strong pump region. When the intensity of the pump beam was increased, the signal for the transition |5S1/2, Fg = 2> → |5P1/2, Fe = 3> displayed a double structure in the dispersive signal whereas the other signals displayed no significant variation other than power broadening. Calculation of the spectral lineshape by using the rate equations demonstrated that the double structure was due to the relatively large signal for the ground state |5S1/2, Fg = 2,mg = 2> due to optical pumping and the large transition strength.

Offset phase locking between two external cavity diode lasers (ECDLs), which was obtained by using a current feedback method, and the observation of a narrow, electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) spectrum, which was obtained by using the offset phase-locked ECDLs are reported. The frequency difference of the offset-phase-locked ECDLs corresponds to 6.8 GHz of the hyperfine-frequency difference between two hyperfine ground states (F = 1 and 2) of 87Rb. The phase error variance α2Φ of the beat-note signal was measured to be less than 0.05 rad2. Comparing the spectral widths of the EIT spectra in the two cases of the phase-locked and the unlocked ECDLs, we observed a decrease in the EIT spectral width from 900 kHz to 37 kHz. 본 연구에서는 독립된 두 대의 외부 공진 반도체 레이저를 전류 되먹임 방법을 이용하여 위상 잠금을 하고 루비듐 (Rubidium, Rb) 원자에 좁은 선폭을 가진 전자기 유도 투과 (electromagnetically induced transparency, EIT) 스펙트럼을 관측하였다. 오프셋 위상 잠금된 두 외부 공진형 반도체 레이저의 진동수 차이는 87Rb 원자의 초미세 바닥준위의 진동수 차이 (F = 1 과 2)에 해당하는 6.8 GHz와 같다. 비트-노트 신호의 위상 오차 가변도 (phase error variance)는 0.05 rad2이하로 측정되었다. 위상 잠금 전과 후에 EIT 스펙트럼을 관측하여 비교한 결과, EIT 스펙트럼의 선폭이 900 kHz에서 37 kHz로 급격하게 줄어든 것을 확인하였다.
Pediatric Deaths and Venipuncture

Venipuncture is a routine and relatively safe and painless medical procedure, necessary for accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, given that pain related to medical procedures may have adverse effects for children, could venipuncture cause deaths in infants and children? We analyzed our cases of unexpected death after venipuncture and conducted a literature review on them. A vasovagal response to noxious stimuli may explain such a sudden death immediately after venipuncture, commonly presented as needle phobia, breathholding spell, and reflex anoxic seizure in the literature, despite the fact that the current medical evidence is not enough to prove their casual relationship. In addition, pain prevention and management during medical procedure is incorporated in clinical guidelines for pediatric patients, because painful medical procedures negatively affect child development. Thus, prevention and management of pain related to medical procedure may be helpful to avoid an adverse vasovagal response to noxious stimuli from occurring.
