Unlike general computers, a computer with robotic abilities would provide users with many distinguished advantages like more intuitiveness, effectiveness, and pleasure. In this paper, we introduce our design process and strategy to develop a Future Robotic Computer (FRC) as the next generation of a personal computer in smart home environments. As a preliminary phase, related researches, projects, and design competitions were reviewed to understand the design trend and to define the distinguished capability of the FRC. For the former part of the design process, nine sets of user scenarios were developed to envision the broad potential of the FRC. As a result of user surveys, the central part comprises four types of interaction design questions extracted from the first and second phases. Finally, three major design strategies for FRC, (1) Natural Interaction, (2) Body Extension, and (3) Limitless Connection, were established by the analysis of the former phases. As an exemplary study, three types of appearance designs were proposed to project possible images of the FRC. This study seeks to achieve product innovation which shifts the way of daily computing.
