Olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) has a great potential value for aquaculture in Korea. The theoretical sex ratio of this flounder is close to 1:1 as it is in many other type of fish. However, according to the size selection during artificial seedling production, there is a possibility of unbalanced sex ratio. The actual flounder culturing needs female seedlings because of faster growth than male in economically. However, little is known about the sex ratio of cultured flounder. The six populations consisted of three wild populations and three cultured populations were analyzed for investigating the sex ratio. The sex ratio of wild populations ranged from 1.10 to 1.93 in female and 0.52 to 0.91 in male. And the sex ratio of cultured populations ranged from 0.20 to 2.15 in female and 0.46 to 4.88 in male. This result indicated that the sex ratio of cultured flounder varies depending on the size selection method.

Olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus is one of the most target fish for aquaculture and national stock enhancement program in Korea. In order to find more information about hatchery fish stocking for stock enhancement we investigated the sex ratio of wild-caught fish populations which were artificially released into wild seas. The recapture rate was 9.0% to 94.5% in studied areas. The proportion of sex ratio ranged from 7.8% to 64.6% in female and from 34.4% to 92.1% in male respectively. This result suggests that the sex ratio of wild populations might be effected by the released fish. So we need more careful stocking program of the fish to preserve the balance of the sex ratio in the wild population.

This study investigated effect of water temperature change on the formation and release of conchospores of Neopyropia yezoensis. We observed that conchocelis growth and conchospores formation in oyster shell at labolatory during 7 weeks. In order to investigate the amount of conchospore formation in oyster shells, which was being cultured at 28℃, was moved to 10℃, 18℃, 28℃, and culture during 6 weeks. At 10℃, we observed an average of 127 for 1 week, 127 for 2 weeks, 95 for 3 weeks, 90 for 4 weeks, 76 for 5 weeks, and 75 for 6 weeks. At 18℃, we observed an average of 141 for 1 week, 135 for 2 weeks, 94 for 3 weeks, 153 for 4 weeks, 162 for 5 weeks, and 2 for 6 weeks. At 28℃, we observed an average of 167 for 1 week, 102 for 2 weeks, 148 for 3 weeks, 157 for 4 weeks, 270 for 5 weeks, and 138 for 6 weeks. Conchospores released from the shell grew into a young thalli in the culture for 6 weeks, and the number of ones was counted. The number of young thalli were investigated at 10℃, 0 for 1 week, 189 for 2 weeks, 200 for 3 weeks, 89 for 4 weeks, 56 for 5 weeks and 27 for 6 weeks. At 18℃, It observed 0 for 1 week, 26 for 2 weeks, 546 for 3 weeks, 16 for 4 weeks, 17 for 5 weeks and 154 for 6 weeks. It was not observed at 28℃.

The study was carried out to investigate the changes of hematological parameters induced by waterborne exposure of chromium (Cr) in the mullet, Mugil cephalus. The mullet was exposed to sub-chronic concentrations of chromium (0, 25, 50, 100, 200 ㎍/L Cr) for 4 weeks. The major hematological findings were significant decreases in the red blood cell (RBC) count and hematocrit value in mullet exposed to ≥50 ㎍/L Cr. Although serum calcium concentration was significantly reduced at ≥50 ㎍/L Cr, magnesium concentration was found to be significantly increased at ≥100 ㎍/L Cr. The serum glucose and total protein concentrations were significantly increased at 200 ㎍/L Cr. However, serum triglyceride concentration did not show any noticeable changes in the range of 25∼200 ㎍/L Cr of chromium compared to control group during the experimental period. A significant increment of GOT (glutamic oxalate transminase) and GPT (glutamic pyruvate transminase) activities was noticed at ≥100 ㎍/L Cr. These results indicate that hematological and serum biochemical changes in the mullet by waterborne exposure to chromium are affected at more than 50 ㎍/L Cr.
