Various chemical agents like surfactants or oxidants have been often used for the remediation of polluted railroad ballast gravels. In this study, novel physical remedaition method using alumina-type media for the treatment on a large-scale. A pilot-scale remediation system was prepared, and the treatment performance was tested under various conditions. It was observed that the treatment efficiency was better at high air pressure, more repetitive treatment, and more treatment time. However, the initial amount of gravels did not show significant effect on the performance because the initial amount (10 100 units) is within the range of the pilot-scale system. The economic aspect of this method will be analyzed to optimize the treatment condition of air pressure, number of repetitive treatment, treatment time, and amount of initial ballast.

Environmental declarations for products is one of the international standard (ISO 14020) out of 3 types Eco Labeling enacted by ISO(International standard organization). This application of LCA for researching harmful material emissions and quantifying their impacts on environment throughout the entire life cycle. Therefore, in this study the Environmental Declarations for products in domestic certification system and its technical aspects such as environmental assessment technique was to review.

Since national mid-term target for GHG reduction was determined in 2009, various efforts in transportations have been prepared. Generally, the GHG emission of transportation is calculated using the emission factor published from IPCC guideline(2006). However, it is necessary to develop new emission factors considering the properties of transportation as well as fuel. In Korean railroad, main emission sources are the consumption of diesel and electricity from railcar operation. The GHG emission of electric-powered railcars can be estimated using national electric emission factor, but diesel-powered railcars show different trends. The purpose of this study was to establish the development plans of emission factors for diesel-powered railcars. As a result, the emission factors of diesel-powered railcars were classified into railcar type, engine type and life cycle, notch, load, and traffic volume. In future, several emission factors with this category will be presented quantitatively through field tests with the order of priority.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change(UNFCCC) is one of the international environmental convention with the goal of stabilizing Greenhouse Gas(GHG) concent in the atmosphere and preventing potentially dangerous change in the earth's climate. The purpose of this convention is to reduce fossil fuel consumption and to prevent GHG emission. The Republic of Korea was one of the Annex-II parties submitted its national communication to the UNFCCC. As a developing county, there is no GHG emission reduction commitments made by South Korea during first commitment period(2008~2012). On the contrary, South Korea' status as an OECD member, joining in 1996, ranks 6th in GHG emission. Furthermore the rate of increase of GHG is first among OECD countries in year 2005. As a result, Korea will probably be incorporated into Annex-I in second commitment period (after 2013). So, Korea government established and announced Voluntary GHG Reduction scheme to reduce emissions of 4%(accounting for 30% reduction base on Business As Usual) from the 2005 level by the year 2020 for mitigation of reduction duty impact. In specific case of Korea, transportation section occupied almost 21% of total energy consumption and nearly 17% of total GHG emission at 2005, so systematic emission management is required. To do so, in this research, we focus on systematic way of GHG management system to handle GHG reduction duties in Railroad section.
