The Comparative Study on <Gujiga>, <Haega>, and <Heonhwaga> There have been many individual researches on <Gujiga> and <Heonhwaga> so far. However, there is no sole research paper on <Haega>, and it is hard to find correlations and comparative studies about these three works. <Gujiga> was a song in the national foundation narratives of Garak in the 1st century, and <Heonhwaga> and <Haega> were recorded in the period of King Sungdeok (702-736) in the 8th century. There is a time gap of around 700 years between them. However, these works were variants of narratives originated from the same sources, and they were good windows which could look into the world of consciousness and cognition of ancient Koreans. The three works, <Gujiga>, <Haega>, and <Heonhwaga> were all listed in the Gii(紀異) section of 『Samgookyusa』 volume 2, and they recorded marvelous and strange affairs developed from one root. <Gujiga> was a ceremonial song commemorating the sacredness of the birth of King Sooro of Garak Nation. <Haega> was an incantational song about the legendary story of the sea dragon coveting the beauty and charms of Mrs. Sooro, settling the problems of reality. <Heonhwaga> was established as a work of literature sublimating the most sublime love (spiritual and mutual sympathy) between Mrs. Sooro and an old man.
Vol.43 No.1
Vol.51 No.-
This study analyzes art projects organized by the two social art groups – Political Art Documentation/Distribution (PAD/D) and Group Material – during the two presidential election campaigns in the 1980s. PAD/D's State of Mind, State of the Union (1984-85) and Group Material’s Democracy (1988-89) demonstrated the change in the mode of activist art that used to be characterized by anti-museum actions and sociopolitical statements. The shift coincided with the mainstream museum’s accommodation of contemporary art activism and political art. As examining each of these projects, this study discusses the collaboration between activist art groups and art institutions while reflecting on the concept of participatory art. State of Mind, State of the Union consisted of exhibitions, performances, street works, video projections, and the Imagegram campaign, through which artists sought to make critical statements on the dangers of the conservative drift of American sociopolitical sectors under the Reagan Adminstration. Democracy, which was staged against the unprecedented media tactics used by the George H. W. Bush presidential campaign in 1988, comprised 4 exhibitions and town hall meetings with the aim of facilitating the political engagement of the audience. This study notes an evident difference in expected roles of the participants between the two projects: i.e., the participatory role shifted from the artists who made political statements to the audience who would interpret and experience the art program.
