Adsorption on activated carbon is a very effective treatment method for removal of a broad spectrum of organic chemicals from water supplies and wastewater. Although GAC(granular activated carbon) treatment has been designated as BAT(best available technology) for the removal of several compounds. there are major technical and economic concerns that are forcing utilities to look at other alternatives including with the new regulations. Adsorption is typically carried out in fixed or pulsed beds in columns of constant cross section or in slurry reactors. Recent studies by the principal investigator has shown that adsorption efficiency can be increased substantially by a judicious selection of adsorbent size distribution and a variable cross section for the column. Under identical operating conditions, a reverse stratified tapered bed was shown to increase breakthrough time by 30% to 200% over the conventional cylindrical fixed bed for the solute-adsorbent system studied. Moreover, column pressure drops are lower for the RSTA than the conventional system. Water and wastewater plants processing large volumes of water can realize significant savings in capital and operating costs by utilizing this type of operation. This has wide ranging implications for adsorption technology and its applications in the processing of water and wastewater, hazardous waste and solid waste leachate treatment, and groundwater remediation.

The removal of phosphate from wastewaters prior to discharge into natural water is an essential measure to prevent eutrophication in receiving waters. Phosphate removal through adsorbents, such as activated alumina, powdered aluminum oxide, activate red mud, flyash, blast furnace slag and other materials, is commonly and successfully practiced. The wasted sludge from seafood processing factory prepared on a laboratory scale has been used to evaluate its performance for phosphate removal. The material has been shown to be a good alternative adsorbent. As much as 90% phosphate removal by the prepared sludge is possible in about 20hrs under the test conditions. Phosphate removal is seen to increase with decreasing adsorbent particle size, increasing relative concentration of phosphate to sludge and increasing adsorbent dose. The removal efficiency is not precipitation dependent in these experimental circumstances.

A non-linear stochastic model is presented to describe the solute concentration profile over time in a batch process. The Langmuir-type non-linear isotherm was incorporated with the model to deal with adsorption. Model parameters were easily estimated by conducting batch experiments. The major advantage of this model is that the model calculations are simple unlike deterministic models which usually require the solution of partial differential equations. The model presented can be used satisfactorily in predicting rate curves for adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) on granular activated carbon (GAC) in batch reactor.

고정상 흡착반응기내에서 휘발성 유기화합물인 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane이 활성탄에 의해 제거되는 과정이 균질고체확산모델(homogeneous solid diffusion model)에 의해 성공적으로 예측되었다. 수학적 모델의 해를 구하기 위해서 등온흡착 파라미터들 뿐만 아니라 경막물질전달계수(film mass transfer coefficient) k_f와 표면확산계수(surface diffusion coefficient) D_s도 정의되어져야 한다. 평형자료들을 얻기 위해서 bottle-point 실험을 하였고 속도파라미터를 구하기 위해서는 간단한 회분식 실험을 하였다. 그리고 실험치와 예측치의 차를 최소화하여 회분식 반응시스템에서의 경막물질전달계수(k_(fb))와 표면확산계수를 구하였다. 고정상 흡착반응기를 위한 표면확산계수는 회분식 실험에서 얻어진 값을 이용할 수 있지만 경막전달계수는 독립적으로 구해야 한다. 따라서 고정상 흡착반응기를 위한 경막전달계수는 문헌으로부터 얻어진 상호관계를 이용하여 구하였다.

A Markov process coupled with interaction between molecules is developed to simulate bisolute adsorption kinetics. This model is relatively simple in that estimates of all model parameters except interaction parameters are obtained from single solute experiment. Transient behavior of molecules can be evaluated by analytically solving a system of the governing ordinary differential equations of the present stochastic model. Adsorption rate profile is not affected by interaction parameters at low concentration range.
