21세기에 들어서면서 해양에 대한 인식은 해양선진국들을 중심으로 하루가 다르게 변모하고 있으며, 석유 및 육상 자원의 고갈의 가속화로 인하여 해양의 중요성은 점차 커져가고 있다. 지속가능한 발전을 위해서는 해조류, 해수 등과 같은 해양자원으로부터 산업용 화학품, 신소재, 연료, 희귀 금속 등의 생산을 가능하게 하는 해양화학생물산업의 개발이 절실히 필요해지고 있다. 본 글에서는 해양화학생물산업 분야 중 세계적으로 각광 받고 있으며 우리나라에서도 발전 가능성이 큰 분야인 해조다당류산업, 해양신소재산업, 해양 바이오연료산업, 해양제염산업, 해양심층수산업 등 다섯 분야를 선정하고 이들 분야의 현황과 전망을 소개하였다. 각 분야별 소개는 산업발전 역사, 기술개발 수준, 산업화 정도를 포함하고 있으며, 국내외 산업경향과 앞으로의 발전 가능성을 조사하였다. 분석결과, 해양화학생물산업기술의 발전을 위해서는 해양생물공정 개발에 대한 적극적인 연구 개발 투자와 해양생물과학자들과 생물화학공학자들간의 협력 연구가 앞으로 더 많이 필요하기는 하지만 해양화학생물 산업의 미래전망은 매우 밝은 것으로 나타났다. As we move into the 21st century, the importance of marine resources is certain to increase due to the accelerated exhaustion of land resources. For the sustainable development of the world, therefore, we need to develop marine chemical bioindustries which enable us to produce industrial chemicals, advanced materials, fuels, and minerals from marine resources such as seaweeds and seawater. In this review, we selected five marine chemical bioindustries which include 1) seaweed polysaccharide industry, 2) marine advanced materials industry, 3) marine biofuel industry, 4) marine sea salt industry, and 5) deep-sea water industry, and discussed the current status and future prospects of each industry sector. It has been assessed that the future of marine chemical bioindustry looks very promising although there are many needs for more intensive research investments on marine bioprocess development through close cooperation between marine biologists and biochemical engineers.
디지털방사선영상에서 추출한 해면질골의 강도와 미세구조의 형태계측학적 분석에 대한 연구

Purpose : To evaluate the relationship between morphometric analysis of bone microstructure from digital radiographic image and trabecular bone strength. Materials and Methods : One hundred eleven bone specimens with 5 mm thickness were obtained from the mandibles of 5 pigs. Digital images of specimens were taken using a direct digital intraoral radiographic system. After selection of ROI (100 × 100 pixel) within the trabecular bone, mean gray level and standard deviation were obtained. Fractal dimension and the variants of morphometric analysis (trabecular area, periphery, length of skeletonized trabeculae, number of terminal point, number of branch point) were obtained from ROI. Punch sheer strength analysis was performed using Instron (model 4465, Instron Corp., USA). The loading force (loading speed 1 mm/min) was applied to ROI of bone specimen by a 2 mm diameter punch. Stress-deformation curve was obtained from the punch sheer strength analysis and maximum stress, yield stress, Young's modulus were measured. Results: Maximum stress had a negative linear correlation with mean gray level and fractal dimension significantly (p<0.05). Yield stress had a negative linear correlation with mean gray level, periphery, fractal dimension and the length of skeletonized trabeculae significantly (p < 0.05). Young's modulus had a negative linear correlation with mean gray level and fractal dimension significantly (p < 0.05). Conclusions : The strength of cancellous bone exhibited a significantly linear relationship between mean gray level, fractal dimension and morphometric analysis. The methods described above can be easily used to evaluate bone quality clinically.

Manufacturing method and technical procedure of 'SNU Sialoop', which was a new device designed for removal of sialolith, were introduced. Two cases about removal of Wharton's duct sialolith using SNU Sialoop were presented.
