Founded on Climate Environment

Vol.26 No.2

The author of "Hoodo-natural feature", Wazuch(和?哲郞)insisted that Japan although belongs to the zone of asian mon-soon, which has a distinct character comparing with the other south-estern nations, for example, India or China. This study is the 3d chapter of "The outline of Japanese culture observed through climatic view point " which consist of 5 chapters. The climate of Japan Islands is peculiar on the following characters. 1. Subtropical high temperature & moisture in summer. 2. Frigid coldness & chilliness in winter. 3. Typhoon which swoops down on the Island without fail several times during late summer or early autumn. 4. Deep snow in winter & heavy rainfall in summer. 5. Perfect 4 seasons and this also can be subdviided more delicately. 6. Unstable ground of the Islands by frequent earth-quakes. 7. The most massed zone of volcanos among the regions which surround the Pacific Ocean. In the Ist Chapter, the topographical condition as Islands was studied as the effective factor germinating the framework of Japanese Culture. In the 2nd Chapter, the long chain of Japan Islands was inquired as the terminal station of the ocean cultures of south-eastern Asia. The areas has also the role of conjunction to the middle eastern culture extending to the european culture. This chapter treats effects of unique Japan Islands climate to the Japanese Culture. The following three thesis are main contents of this chapter. 1. plants-related culture 2. housing -related culture 3. bath-related culture.

In the Kokin Anthology and the Goseng Anthology

Vol.16 No.2

In may essay published last year, the fact the nature, especially the plants, takes part in the Manyo Anthology as a key medium for the expression of poets' feelings and the species of plants appearedin this anthology rach to 175 kinds, was asserted. It is a very notable fact thepoets of the Manyo Shu discriminated 175 kinds of plants 1,300 years ago. In this essay thepoems of Heian dynasty which folows Aska and Nara dynasty were analysed. As the objects of tudy, the Kokin Anthoiogy and Goseng Anthology which enroll 2,537 poems were chosen. When compared the number of poems, the Manyo-Shu exceeds the Kokin Shu and Gosen-Shu by about 2000, adn the ratio is 9:5, however in the number of plant species the Manyo-Shu exceeds the total plant species of both anthologies by 137 and the ratio is 175:38. This fact teaches us that many species of the Manyo-Shu plants decreased with the passing of time. Adding to this phenomenon. the order of appearance frequency of the plants in thepoems shows a turn over. For example, the cherry blossoms which was the ninth in the manyo-Shu has risen to the top ranking in Kokin-Wakashu, and the bush clover which was the top in themanyo-Shu has fallen to the fourth. The plum trees which was the second in the second in the Manyo-Shu is keeping its positionas before. Such a turnover is a very important index to find out theJapanese outlookon nature. In this essay I tried to make clear the reason why the two following phenomena appeared. One is why this number of plant species in Kolin-Waka shu and Gosen-Wakashu decreased, compared with that of ManyoShu, and theother is why the remarkable turnover in the order of appearance frequency happened with the passing of time from Aska-Nara dynastyti to Heian dynasty.

Vol.19 No.-

In accordance with that the recent business environment is described as information era or knowledge industry, the importance of intangible and intellectual assets or nonfinancial performance measures is becoming more critical. It has been also indicated that traditional performance measurement systems have limitations and inadequate problems for these needs. Kaplan and Norton suggested new performance measurement synthesis: the Balanced Scorecard that could be supplemental to traditional system, and being utilized by many companies nowadays. In this paper, the concepts, cause-and-effect relationships, and agenda of BSC have been studied. And theoretical, case, and empirical studies concerning BSC have also studied through former research. Also, it is tried to grasp concrete relationships between each performance measures in this paper. The examining of each performance measures is done through the former studies, and the analyzed results are embodied into four performance measures(financial, customer, internal business process, and learning and growth perspectives) of BSC model. By congregating the results of studies for this each performance measures, the framework of this research model is constructed with link of cause-and-effect relationships, intervening effect, and moderating effect by empowerment. By the results of this empirical study, learning and growth performance affect directly to customer performance, and also affect indirectly to customer performance measures intervening internal business process performance. Direct affection on financial performance by internal business process performance is verified, but the fact is found that intervening affection on financial performance by internal business process performance via customer performance measures is more critical. It is also investigated that customer performance measures affect financial performance. It is verified that the empowerment has an moderating effect upon the linkage of cause-and-effect relationships between learning and growth performance and internal business process performance, and between internal business process performance and customer performance. But it is examined that there is no moderating effect by the empowerment on the linkage of cause-and-effect relationships between internal business process performance and financial performance, and between learning and growth performance and financial performance, and between customer performance and financial performance. These results are to examine interrelationships of business performance measures multi-dimensionally, and to suggest the empirical performance measurement model of manufacturing industry. Also these are to affirm the priority oder of business effort into specific factor for enhancements of overall business performance in a short term.

Vol.15 No.-

It is a common phenomenon that nature takes part in the field of literature, and Japanese literature has pioneerd an unique genre in that field. This report treats the manner of contemplation concerning nature(especially plants) in Japanese literature. Generally speaking it is the medium for the expression of feeligns. Subjects of nature is used to explain two different ideas. one is the intuititve concept or pure feeling concept. and the other is the moral concept or artificially valued concept. In Japanese literature-especially in Manyoshu-, the plants take part in it as an intuitive creation, in other words thepoetsof Manyoshu had found the beauty of plants not throught their moral significance but through their original beauty without adding any moral explanation. In this report I have compared and analyzed the Shijo plants and Manyoshuplants(I have named the plants which take park in Shijo & Manyoshu. see table #1) I am afraid of being criticized because both poems were written at different periods of time. but I beg you ot passover this for the moment. The result of comparign literary plants has made it us possible to classify into the following three groups. The first group; pine and palm blossoms are treasured by bothpoets of Shijo & Manyoshu poetry. The Second grup; which is treasured eccentrically by Manyoshu poets, but is treated coldly by Shijo poets. For example, bush clover, pink, ominaeshi (a grass which blows at autumn and belongs to genus patrinia), common reed grass, pampas grass, lawn grass. Above all, the busy clover is cited in Manyoshu poetry more than 140 times and acquired the first rank in frequency. but in Shino poetry bush clover is nearly forgotten and is cited only twice. (as fire wood and as symbol of a grave-yard tree) The third group; whcih is treasured by Shijo-poets. They accepted these without any antagonistic argument. The idea of these plants was transmitted through the eyes of chinese poets-so that the plants were cited in idiomatic form, for example, green-willow, heaven-peach, pear-brossom, red-lotus, cold-chrisanthmum. It is very notable point that poets of Manyoshu have discriminated against 157 kinds of plants about 1,300years ago. These fact teach us not only their penetrating influence concerning nature in poetry, but also their adhesion with nature it-self. "The seven grasses of autumn" which were selected by Yamanoueno-okura(a representative poet of Manyoshu) displays the essence of Manyoshu poetry using delicacy & lonleness. In hisworks the essence may be linking with the penetrating sensibility of Japanese culture. In the famous "Genjimonogatari", a long love story by Murasaki-shikibu in Heian dynasty, we can find the following sentence. "In china, the spring landscape decorated by beautiful flowers is treasured, but In Japan, the sadness of autumn is valued." And "the seven grasses of autumn" is the concrete expression of sorrow which is created by Manyoshu-poetry, Hagi, the name of bush clover, comes from two different chnise characters. the upper part "? " means grass, and the lower part "秋"autumn. These two part are combined by the Japanese originally, so that we cannot find this character in the chinese dictionary. This fact teaches us that poets of Manoshu poetry thought that "Hagi" si a represented "grass" of autumn. and we also can imagine their thoughts. In summary, I would say that the essence of Manyoshu is a concept of "flowers and leaves of bush clover". Going a step further, I would define this as "dew-pearled flowers and leaves of bush clover.".
