Purpose: The aim of this study was to establish an association between grip strength and gait variability in the elderly. Methods: The participants in this experiment (n = 20) were aged 65 or older. Power grip and lateral pinch forces were obtained in grip strength tests, and spatiotemporal gait parameters were collected from IMU sensors during 6 min actual walking to test the gait of participants. The collected gait parameters were converted to coefficient of variation (CV) values. To confirm the association between grip strength and gait variability, a partial correlation analysis was conducted in which height, weight, and gait speed were input as controlling variables. Results: Grip power showed a significant negative correlation with the stride length CV (r = -0.52), and the lateral pinch force showed a significant negative correlation with the stance CV (r = -0.65) and swing CV (r = -0.63). Conclusion: This study reveals that gait variability decreases as grip strength increases, although height, weight, and gait speed were controlled. Thus, grip strength testing, a simple aging evaluation method, can help identify unstable gait in older adults at risk of falling, and grip strength can be utilized as a non-invasive measurement method for frailty management and prevention.
로지스틱 회귀분석을 이용한 뇌졸중 환자의 활동제한이 우울증 및 삶의 질에 미치는 영향

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to help physical therapists involved in rehabilitation in the direction of clinical intervention in the treatment of stroke patients by understanding how an activity restriction of stroke patients affects depression and the quality of life associated with health. METHODS: This study assessed 404 stroke patients from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey. The subjects were divided into two categories: activity restriction and non-activity restriction. The variables used in this study were depression diagnosed by a doctor and EQ-5D, which evaluates the quality of life. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratios associations of activity restriction with depression and the quality of life in stroke patients. RESULTS: The diagnosis of depression with an activity restriction was 11.2%, while 4.8% of those with non-activity restrictions were diagnosed with depression (p<.05), and the EQ-5D index of was .68±.03, .88±.01(p<.05). The odds ratio for depression with an activity restriction was 3.37 (95% CI, 1.49-7.63) compared to the non-activity restriction. A statistically significant difference in the odds ratio was observed for each item in the EQ-5D. CONCLUSION: Activity restriction in stroke patients increases the probability of depression, and reduces the quality of life significantly. The treatment for stroke patients should be approached, taking psychological factors into account. In addition, rehabilitation programs that can be performed systematically and continuously are deemed necessary.
골관절염 환자의 활동제한이 건강관련 삶의 질과 우울증에 미치는 영향

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to provide a basis for the need to apply psychological factors-based rehabilitation programs to osteoarthritis patients by understanding how the limitations on the activities of osteoarthritis patients relate to the health-related quality of life and depression. METHODS: This study assessed 1,994 osteoarthritis patients from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2016-2018). The subjects were divided into two categories: with activity limitation and without activity limitation. A Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were conducted. RESULTS: The EQ-5D index of subjects with activity limitation was .84 ± .16, it was .94 ± .12 in those with no activity limitation (p < .05). The diagnosis of depression was 16.8% and; 8.3% in those with and without activity limitation, respectively (p < .05). There was a significant difference in the odds ratio for each item in the EQ-5D. Moreover, the odds ratio for depression with an activity limitation was 2.171 (1.512 - 3.118) compared with no activity limitation. CONCLUSION: The activity limitation of osteoarthritis patients reduces the health-related quality of life significantly and increases the probability of depression. Therefore, the treatment of osteoarthritis patients should be approached considering the psychological conditions. Moreover, early diagnosis of depressive symptoms is needed to prevent symptom deterioration and increase the compliance with rehabilitation therapy.
시각적 피드백을 이용한 닫힌 사슬 운동이 만성 발목 불안정성 성인남성의 하지 근활성도 및 발목 불안정성 지수에 미치는 영향

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects on muscle activation and ankle instability following sudden ankle inversion of the closed kinetic chain exercise using visual feedback to evaluate chronic ankle instability in adult males. METHODS: In this study, 28 subjects with chronic ankle instability were recruited and randomly divided into a closed kinetic chain exercise using a visual feedback group(n=13) and an open kinetic chain exercise group(n=15). Each group underwent 30 minutes of exercise three times a week for 8 weeks. The electromyographic(EMG) values of the rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior, peroneus longus, peroneus brevis, and lateral gastrocnemius muscles were measured to analyze muscle activity. The Cumberland ankle instability tool(CAIT) was used to measure ankle instability. RESULTS: Both groups showed improvements in tibialis anterior, peroneus longus and CAIT score(p<.05). In the experimental group, there were significant improvements in the rectus femoris, biceps femoris, and lateral gastrocnemius muscle activation(p<.05). CONCLUSION: The results suggest that closed kinetic chain exercise using visual feedback can be a useful treatment method for patients with chronic ankle instability.
작동 조건 변화에 따른 직접 메탄올 연료전지의 성능 특성

In this work, the characteristics of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) were investigated under changes of various operating conditions in order to understand the behaviors of the single fuel cell and find the optimal operating conditions. The operating parameters included the operating temperature. methanol concentration, flow rate, cathode humidification temperature, and so on. The membrane electrode assembly(MEA), with a Pt-Ru(4㎎/㎠) anode catalyst and Pt-black(4㎎/㎠) cathode catalyst, was used for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction. The methanol in water solution was used as the fuel and the air was used as the oxidant in all experiments. The cell performance was analyzed based on the measurement of the current-voltage and current-power density characteristics expressed by polarization curve. The results showed that performance of the single cell was enhanced by increasing cell temperature, air flow rate, cathode back-pressure. but the temperature effect of cathode preheater was almost negligible. When cathode backpressure was increased up to 200kPa, the highest single cell power density of 0.178W/㎠ was achieved with 1M methanol feed at 80°C of cell temperature. From this experimental study, it was revealed that changing various conditions can be an important role in suitable operation of DMFC.
