Vol.19 No.1

This study identified cognitive styles of online searchers in terms of Field Dependence(FD) and Field Independence(FI) dimension and determined whether searching performance was affected by FD/FI cognitive differences between online searchers and the extent to which searching performance was affected by the FD/FI dimension of cognitive style. This study used a quasi-experimental design with 41 student subjects using the Lockheed DIALOG system and ERIC ONTAP database. Cognitive styles of student subjects were measured by using GEFT(Group Embedded Figure Test) and the subjects were divided into two cognitive groups-FD and FI based on the GEFT scores. Each subject was assigned two predetermined searches which had different search goals-a "high precision search" and a "high recall search." Search performance of the two cognitive groups on the two problems was compared in order to see how these two groups responded to achieving different search goals in terms of search strategy, search inputs, and resulting search output. The major findings of this study were : 1. The pattern of approaching a search problem regardless of whether it was a high precision search or a high recall search was not significantly different between the two cognitive groups. 2. The FI group tended to use significantly more terms for the high recall search than the FD group but slightly less time the FD group. However, significant differences in connect time between the two groups were not revealed. 3. For both search problems the FI group achieved a significantly higher success rate than the FD group. The FI group were significantly more successful searchers than the FD group. As for unit / cost, although the FI group were more cost effective than those of the FD group for both searches, these differences were too small to be statistically significant. 4. Mean differences of the search performance variables between the FD/FI groups were consistent across the two types of search questions. The FI group seemed to by equally effective for both types of search questions. In conclusion, the differences found in number of terms used and success rate between the two cognitive groups apparently resulted from different cognitive styles

Vol.2 No.-

The online searching environments include three elements, i.e., end-users who seek information, searchers who conduct online searching for end-users, and search systems which have computer-processed data and provide search services. The Search interview takes place between end-users and searchers. During the search interview searchers are expected to grasp the real information need of the end-users. This article reviews the theoretical background, goals, and functions of the search interview in a critical way. Related researches in the field of search interview are also examined.

Vol.29 No.-

The purpose of this study is to identify the degree to which the card catalog in a university serves its users and to provide useful information for the design of conversion from card catalog to online catalog. From August 19th to September 16th 1995, 278 users of Duksung Women's University Library were randomley selected and surveyed in terms of card catalog use, success rate of card searching, and catalog use training received. Major findings are as follows; 1. Taking into considerations the fact that Library users tended to use more heavily oriental card catalog(61.8%) than western card catalog(8.3%) or classification card catalog(26.3%), oriental card catalog should be designed to improve its search function of the catalog. 2. It was found that the university library card catalog was not easy to use by 49.3% of the users of Duksung University Library. 3. One of main reasons why the card catalog is hard to use is that there is no subject card to which users can access for subject searching. Besides, users have difficulties in locating appropriate classification numbers for subjects which users are interested in. 4. When success rate is defined as finding appropriate cards in catalog boxes, the success rate was reported to be 87.0%. 5. The major access points of known items which library users utilized mostly were author(18.3%) and title(74.5%). 6. In case of translated versions of foreign materials, original author name cards instead of pronounced original name card written in Korean were given to them as access points. 79.9% of library users of Duksung Women's University insisted that both original and pronounced author name written in Korean should be given as access points to foreign authors for the sake of user's convenience. 7. Formal training programs for card catalog use were found not to be sufficient. Small group informal training courses should be offered to users who need to get information for catalog use by library staffs. 8. Considering the trend orders of access points have been changed from title, author and subject in card catalog to title, keyword, and author in online catalog, the existing card catalog of Duksung Women's University is expected not to meet future users' needs for subject searching unless the functions of subject searching of catalog is improved

1988 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.19 No.2

This paper intends to introduce various bibliographic CD-ROM database products which can be employed in library environments instead of practising online bibliographic searching. However, impacts and future prospectives of CD-ROM searching on online bibliographic searching are explored. Possible applicable areas of CD-ROM technologies in Korean library setting are recommended.

Vol.22 No.-

The objective of this study is to find out the degree to which library collections are used in a university library and what characteristics of library materials affect book use or non-use. Moreover, book use by subject field is reviewed in order to examine whether there are differences in terms of usage patterns and aging in use. 809 titles from the general collection in Duksung Women's University Library are randomly selected and their circulation data and bibliographic characteristics are analyzed. The major findings of this study are as follows. 33.9% of library collections have never been used. Among them, materials in Social Sciences, Applied Sciences, and Literature account for 56.5% of never-used-books. Of non-used-books or 33.9% of library collections domestic materials occupy 56.5% and the rest of them or 44.5% are foreign books. 66.1% of library collections are used at least more than once accounting for 4,983 circulations. Among them 9.0% of used-books satisfy 53.7% of 4,983 circulation requirements. As this study defines core collections in Duksung Women's University Library as meeting 90% of circulation requirements, 251 among 809 titles or 30.9% of the library collections are identified as core collections, which are used more than five times. The degree of book use by subject field is identified as over-used, under-used, and adequately used ones. Philosophy, Language, Art, and Literature are over-used collections and Social Sciences and History are under-used collections. Meanwhile following hypotheses are tested. The first hypothesis regarding book use by subject field attempts to determine whether or not usage patterns are different. The answer from the Chi-Square test is that the book use rate by subject field is significantly different(p<.001). Collections in the fields of Philosophy, Literature, Language, and Art are used significantly more than the books in the fields of Religion, Social Sciences, Sciences, and History. In order to determine whether aging of books is different among subject field collections, the Chi-Square test also reveals that the collections show significantly different aging patterns in use between two categories of collections, Religion and Applied Sciences(p<.05). Books in Applied Sciences are aging more rapidly than those in Religion, that is book use in Applied Sciences is more rapidly decreased than Religion. The last hypothesis with respect to book use by language addresses whether or not foreign and domestic books differ in use. The t-test reveals that foreign and domestic books show significantly different use rates(p<.01). That is, domestic books are significantly used more than foreign books.

Vol.30 No.4

A variety of searcher traits, characteristics, subject background and behaviors have been the subject of investigations exploring various hypotheses relation to searching performances. Previous studies have focused on searchers personal characteristics such as training, experience, subject knowledge, intelligence, cognitive style, attitude and searching style. Each of these factors is examined in this paper in order to find out searcher's personal characteristics affecting searching performance. Surprisingly, searching training and experience have not been found to influence searching performance. The hypothesis that intellectual ability correlates with the ability to online search seems to have little effect. Various cognitive styles of searchers were tested to find out whether they relate to search results. Only FD/FI cognitive style were found to be significant in relation to search results. Searchers showed a variety of attitudes about online searching. They revealed sensitivity toward searching charges. The attitude toward charges was reflected on the searching behavior. The sensitive searchers tend to conduct cost-effective searches. Searching styles of intermediaries were characterized as interactive and fast batch. It was found that experienced searchers prefer simple searches which do not explore the interactive capabilities of online system. In summary, previous studies have confirmed that there are apparently great individual differences among online searchers in searching behaviors as well as attitudes. But relationships between these individual differences and search performance were too weak to be significant
