Vol.40 No.-
This study focuses on empirical analysis of total JIT system implementation's effect on supply chain performance. Total JIT system implies an integrated implementation of JIT operation, JIT purchasing and JIT selling. Based on 128 manufacturing business unit surveys in Korea, three proposed total JIT system constructs (JIT operation, JIT purchasing and JIT selling) were tested and refined through confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency analysis. JIT operation outperformed the other two in explaining the overall supply chain performance and seemed to serve as a fundamental factor for better supply chain performance. Output supply chain performance such as sales volume, net profit, fast order fulfillment, delivery error, customer complaints showed a significant relationship with JIT operation. Mix flexibility and product flexibility also showed a positive close relationship with JIT operation. JIT selling showed a significant positive relationship with two flexibility performances (volume flexibility and delivery flexibility) as well as fast order fulfillment. However, JIT purchasing came up with no significant relationship with a single supply chain performance.

The Japanese manufacturers outperformed their Korean counterparts in manufacturing competence comparison based on the four recently proposed manufacturing competence measurement models. Even though some models didn't provide a statistically enough significance level, most of them consistently provided the Japanese manufacturers with higher competence values. This Japanese manufacturers' higher manufacturing competence seems to come from the higher consistency between their perceived importance and implementation performance of the manufacturing competence components. Another reason for this higher manufacturing competence seems to come from that they also put more emphasis on the manufacturing practices relevant to improving their strategically important manufacturing competence components. Based on these findings more emphasis on improving the consistency between strategic orientation and implementation efforts need to be done for the Korean manufacturers to achieve better manufacturing competence.
Their Characteristics and Challenges
Vol.2 No.-
This study aims to find out practical implications for enhancing the competitiveness of Korean manufacturers through the comparisons of their competitive strategy and improvement practices with those of the U.S. and Japanese manufacturers. The Korean manufacturers seem to fall behind in strategically emphasizing and accomplishing basic manufacturing competences such as quality and cost leaderships, and to be less strategically focussed on developing geographical markets or customer segments where they can have comparative advantages over their counterparts. In terms of their improvement practices and endeavors, they also need to put more emphasis on enhancing capabilities of design engineering and information technologies to come up with those so called world-class manufacturers.
Their Implications and Limitations
Vol.32 No.-
Manufacturing competence has been recognized as an effective strategic weapon for competing in volatile market environments since Skinner pointed out its direct impact on business competitiveness. This study focuses on what competitive priorities need to be emphasized to determine manufacturing competence and how they can be integrated to come up with appropriate manufacturing competence measure. An extensive literature review was conducted to identify a set of competitive priorities which were acknowledged in common as important one through many studies. Several manufacturing competence measurement models were also discussed in detail by reviewing their conceptual and methodological validities. A hypothetical competence measurement model was proposed to overcome the limitations and weakness these competence models might have.
