FBG temperature sensor and strain sensor has been used to monitoring shrinkage and temperature of high rise building in construction site in its casting early age. The test results indicate that this monitoring method is a practical method for monitoring concrete at very early age. And the experiment of concrete curing monitored by dual FBGs was carried out to test the feasibility of the temperature compensation technique.

The uneven shrinkage strain during concrete hardening period is one of the main causes for structure cracking. Therefore, shrinkage monitoring during concrete early age is significant for controlling inner strain distribution by improving curing process, thereby ensuring the quality and safety of whole structures. In this paper, three different methods including using FBG embedded strain sensors with different temperature compensation technique (FBG temperature sensor or thermocouple) and KM embedded strain gauges are used to monitor concrete shrinkage during early age. The experiment results show that all the used method successfully grasp the early age shrinkage of concrete. And quality comparison among these three methods has been analyzed.

For high performance concrete(HPC), due to its low water cement ratio and addition of mineral admixtures, pretty high autogenous shrinkage and thermal deformation occur at early age of HPC casting (especially before hardening), which may lead to early age cracking of HPC structures, and influence the durability of HPC. This paper has monitored the early age properties of HPC successfully by embedded FBG strain sensor. The results show that the deformation increases rapidly within the first day after HPC casting. And its value is up to 57 με, which is the 35% of two-week deformation (165 με). Considering the durability and permeability of HPC, first-day deformation is pretty high and can not be neglected. Also, FBG monitoring system has been used to measure early age deformation and temperature of HPC retaining wall simultaneously. Temperature compensation for FBG strain sensor is always necessary for accurate strain monitoring. The monitoring technique used here can be extended to concrete early age behavior monitoring in mass concrete structure with any size.

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have already been the focus for structural health monitoring due to their distinguishing advantages. However, due to bare optical fiber’s fragility, bare FBG without encapsulation is not properly applied in practical infrastructures directly. So the encapsulation techniques to make encapsulated FBG strain sensor show very important in pushing forward the application of FBGs in structural health monitoring. In this paper, a simplified method to analyze the stress transferring rules for FBG strain sensors embedded in concrete is put forward according to the theory of mechanics of composite materials. Shear lag theory is applied to analyze the stress transferring rule of embedded FBG strain sensor in measured host material at the first time. The measured host objects (concrete) and the encapsulated FBG strain sensor are regarded as a composite, and then the stress transfer formula and stress transfer coefficient of encapsulated FBG sensor are obtained.
