The intelligence of the tire supporting the body and contacting with the road is vital to improve the safety of the vehicle while driving. To install the sensors for measuring behavior of the tire is necessary. However, It is difficult to apply a wired system on the wheel. It is necessary to implement an self-powering system to be mounted inside the tire . The purpose of the study is to convert the strain energy caused by deformation of the tire during driving into electrical energy. For the energy conversion, the usage of a flexible piezofiber is suitable to tire application. The amount of strain varied by speed, load and the tire internal pressure is measured according to two axial directions to primarily evaluate the amount of available strain energy. The amount of strain is changed from 700 to 5800 micro strain. Also, to predict generated energy from a tire, the analysis of the relationship between strain and voltage is performed and tests for the impedance matching between piezofiber and circuit are conducted to optimize external loads for transferring energy efficiently. Based on above results, 0.58mJ electrical energy can be generated by using the lateral direction strain(700 to 150 micro) showing minimal variation on the tire. The results of this study is expected to enhance the possibility of the self-generation type wireless sensor system.

It is evident that the information between the tire and the road condition becomes more and more important in connection with the vehicle dynamic control. Although TPMS(Tire Pressure Monitoring System) has already been commercialized and used in the vehicle, it is only able to give the tire information which is related to the tire pressure and temperature. On the other hands, the purpose of ‘Intelligent Tire System’ is to carry out the real time measurement of the longitudinal, the lateral and the vertical force that is generated between the tire and the road surface, and so it could enhance the vehicle dynamic control. The intelligent tire system has the main three parts; The sensor part to measure the 3-axis tire force, the wireless communication part to transfer the measured value, the batteryless power part to supply the sensor power. In this paper the pros and cons of several concepts of the main parts are compared and one of them is chosen to do feasibility test.
