To investigate the interrelationship between methionine and choline in the broiler chicks, an experiment with 3 × 3 factorial design, 3 levels of methionine supplementation (0.00, 0.15, 0.30%) and 3 levels of choline supplementation (0,00, 0.05, 0.10%), was carried out. A total of 360 birds with 9 treatment composed of possible combination of 2 factors and 3 levels of them, were allotted with quadruplicate groups of 10 birds. Experimental diets (CP : 21%; ME : 3000 ㎉) were based on corn and soybean meal and considered to be adequate in all known required nutrients (NRC, 1977) excluding sulfur containing amino acids. Growth response from supplemental choline was not as great as that obtained by the addition of methionine but in the absence of sufficient methionine, choline was partially effective as a methyl donor. It is concluded that present experimental diet composed of corn and soybean meal was deficient in metabolically labile methyl groups and the response to choline in correcting deficiencies of labile methyl groups in cornsoybean diet was about 0.78 times that of methionine. Liver weight was not influenced by supplementation of methionine and choline. Liver fat content was influenced by supplemental methionine and choline. But there was not consistant relationship between supplemental methionine and liver fat or between supplemental choline and liver fat.

It has been indicated by several researchers that prolonged use of antibiotics for livestock feed caused several problems such as accumulation of antibiotics in animal body, outbreak of antibiotics-resistant microbes, etc. It would be very meaningful to find out new growth stimulating agents which not only have the same growth promoting effect as antibiotics but also do not reveal the adverse effect of antibiotics mentioned above. In these aspects, the present study was conducted to examine the growth promoting effect of herba on broiler chicks. Three-day old 240 Hibro-Hisex strain male commercial broiler chicks were distributed to 5 treatments (hot water extracted herba solution A; Kwackhyangjungkisan, B; Sanghwatang, C; Aeyeop, antibiotics, and control), and 6 replicates were allowed to a treatment with 8 birds per replicate. The results of present experiment continued for 6 weeks are as follows. 1. Body weight gain of 6 treatments were in order of herbs A, herbs B, antibiotics, control and herbs C, but there were no significant differences among 6 treatments. Herbs A and B groups improved body weight gain 2.5% and 2.0% respectively as compared to control group. 2. Herbs groups A and B showed slightly higher feed consumption as compared to control group, but antibiotics and herbs C groups revealed lower results than that of control group. There were no significant differences among treatments. 3. Feed conversion rates were in order of antibiotics, herbs A, herbs B, herbs C and control, and any of 6 treatments showed no significant difference. It was indicatable that although antibiotics group showed relatively lower feed consumption than other groups, showed a little better results in feed conversion rate as compared to other treatment groups. 4. In mortality, there were no significant differences among treatments. According to the above results, it could be said that although herbs A and B did not show remarkable improvement in body weight gain, feed consumption and feed convection rate, they have growth stimulating effect in a little.
