Recently, applications of magnesium alloy products to the automotive and electrical industries gradually become popular due to their excellent physical properties, such as specific strength and specific modulus. However, the constraints of magnesium materials in utilization technologies have become a significant limitation on the applications. In particular, due to the limitation of welding technology, mechanical joining techniques which can replace the popular joining technologies, typically welding, are critically needed. Current levels of the joining technology are insufficient not only in experimental but also in the simulation approaches for mechanical joining. In other words, theoretical and experimental studies about ductile fracture in large deformation are rare and there are hardly reliable results yet. Thus, in other to understand the role of microstructure on the mechanical properties and damage behavior, elaborately numerical researches are required. In this presentation, the finite element method combined with a suitable constitutive model and a fracture model considering limited dislocation slip systems of HCP materials is employed in order to theoretically analyze the mechanical clinching process of magnesium alloy sheet. We could understand the mechanical joining and draw optimization conditions for sound processing and good joining strength.
