The Effects of Stair Climbing Using Wearable Robot Bot Fit's Resistance

Objective: The purpose of this study is to confirm the exercise effect when combining wearable exercise assist robot, Bot fit'sresist mode (Samsung Electronics) and stair climbing. Design: Cross-section studyMethods: Targeting 53 adults and seniors, foot pressure and muscle activity were measured when climbing 3-story stairs usingfoot pressure measurement equipment (W-insole Science System) and surface muscle activity measurement equipment (sEMG;FreeEMG, BTS Bioengineering, Italy) using Bot Fit’s resist mode. All subjects were measured without wearing Bot Fit, and thedata between the two conditions were compared and analyzed. Results: The front area(p<0.01) and middle area(p<0.05) foot pressures of adults significantly increased when wearing the Botfit. Frontal area foot pressure significantly increased in elderly people with knee arthritis and obesity(p<0.05). The gastrocnemiusactivity in all subjects significantly decreased after wearing Bot Fit(p<0.01). In elderly people with knee arthritis, the muscleactivity of the rectus femoris was significantly reduced(p<0.05)., and in obese elderly people, the muscle activity of thegastrocnemius muscle was significantly reduced(p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on the results of this study, it is possible to induce correct stair climbing posture when climbing stairs usingBot fit resistance mode. In particular, it is expected to be an effective exercise for strengthening muscle endurance by increasingthe activity of the rectus femoris muscle.

Objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of regular exercise through the combined walking-oriented aerobic and resistance exercises using EX1 in young adults. Design: Experimental one group pre and post testMethods: Participants comprised17 healthy young adults. All subjects performed a combined exercise program for 10 times using EX1. We measured quadriceps muscle thickness using ultrasound. Additionally, the hand grip strength test, and sit and reach test were performed before and after the exercise. Through paired t-test, we investigated whether there was a statistically significant difference in the measurement results after exercise program. Results: The rectus femoris muscle contraction ratio showed significant difference after exercise(P< 0.01). In the sit and reach test, flexibility showed significant difference after exercise(P< 0.01). The hand grip strength test also showed significant difference after exercise(P< 0.05). Conclusions: Healthy young adults can effectively perform various exercises commonly performed in daily life using EX1.

Objective: This study was conducted to analyze the effect of wearable complex muscle support system on energy efficiency during walking in elderly. Design: Cross sectional studyMethods: Twenty healthy elderly participated in this study. All subjects performed a 6 minuteswalk test(6MWT) and stair climbing test in dual, slack and no suit conditions. In each condition, oxygen consumption(VO2), metabolic equivalents(METs), energy expenditure measures(EEm), physiological cost index(PCI), walking velocity and heartrate were measured. Through repeated measured ANOVA, it was investigated whether there was a statistically significant difference in the measurement results between the three conditions. Results: In over-ground walking, VO2, METs and EEm showed significant differences between no suit and slack conditions(p <0.05). In stair climbing, VO2 showed significant difference between slack and dual conditions(p<0.05). Also, METs and EEm showed significant differences between no suit and slack, and between slack and dual conditions(p<0.05). Conclusions: Wearing the wearable complex muscle support system for elderly does not have much benefit in energy metabolism efficiency in over-ground, but there is a benefit in stair walking.

Heat pump driven liquid desiccant (HPLD) system, which takes advantage of cooling capacity and heating capacity from evaporator and condenser respectively, have been developed rapidly in recent years. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate energy saving potential of a HPLD system compared to a conventional liquid desiccant (LD) system. R-134a was used for the refrigerant in the heat pump and aqueous solution of lithium chloride was used in the LD system. A simulation based on an empirical model of an absorber was conducted, and total energy consumption in the proposed HPLD system were compared and analyzed with that of the conventional LD system. As a result, the proposed system showed better performance than the conventional liquid desiccant system in the aspect of energy saving. Moreover, HPLD is expected to have a great advantage in terms of compactness from the replacement of the cooling and heating devices in the conventional LD system with a heat pump.

Defense system is system of systems that is composed of complicated hardware and software. And defense R&D project is performed by regionally dispersed and hierarchically complex organizations. We propose OWS-R process model that is inter-related interaction of organization, task, deliverable and requirement decomposition. OWS-R process is systematic approach that can enable elaborate design process under complicated project environment. OWS-R process is reviewed from the perspective of well-know model based systems engineering, MBSE. And we propose web-based engineering data management framework that realizes OWS-R process model. Project customizing framework by introducing various new concepts for project setup environment is proposed. And we compare various characteristics of proposed framework with well-known commercial system engineering/requirement management tools.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of balance training using fully immersive VR devices on the balance andwalking abilities of stroke patients. Design: Randomized controlled trialMethods: This study involved 54 stroke patients divided into three groups: VRT(VR and traditional physical therapy), VR(VRonly), and TPT(traditional physical therapy only). Interventions were administered twice daily for 30 minutes over eight weeks. Outcome measures included the Berg Balance Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, 10-meter walk test, gait analysis, andActivities-specific Balance Confidence Scale. Results: The VRT and VR groups showed significant effects on spatiotemporal variables and confidence compared to the TPTgroup (p<0.05). Specifically, the VR group demonstrated superior effects in TUG, 10MWT, velocity, stride length, single-legsupport, and ABC compared to the other two groups (p<0.05). Conclusions: Fully immersive VR balance training had a positive impact on balance, walking, and confidence in chronic strokepatients. Traditional physical therapy alone showed limited effectiveness, highlighting the potential of VR-based interventions instroke rehabilitation. These findings underscore the importance of integrating VR technology into clinical practice to enhanceoutcomes for stroke survivors.
Correlation among triceps surae muscle structure, balance, and gait in persons with stroke

Objective: This study aimed to compare muscle structure, balance, and gait parameters between healthy adults and persons with stroke and to analyze the correlation among these variables. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty persons with stroke (11 male, 9 female) and twenty healthy participants (9 male, 11 female) were included. Ultrasound images of the triceps surae and the tibialis anterior were acquired in sitting resting, sitting co-contraction, and standing resting positions and also during the functional reach test (FRT) and single leg anterior reaching test (SLART). Muscle thickness and fascicle length were measured. Spatiotemporal parameters of gait were measured using a pressure walkway. Gait speed, cadence, step length, stride length, stance time, and swing time were measured. Results: Changes in percent fascicle length were significantly greater in the gastrocnemius and soleus (SOL) muscles of healthy adults in the sitting co-contraction position (p<0.05). The percent fascicle length of the SOL in FRT and SLART were significantly greater in healthy adults (p<0.05). The mid-stance phase of stroke patients was shorter than healthy adults (p<0.05). A negative correlation was observed between percent fascicle length of the SOL in the sitting co-contraction position and the proportion of the mid-stance phase (p<0.05). Conclusions: The function of the triceps surae is affected in persons with stroke when compared with healthy adults. This can lead to difficulty in performing tasks that involve forward transfer of weight. If the triceps surae is not sufficiently secured, the possibility of compensation in the stance phase increases during gait.
