Shock absorber reduces speed of a colliding objects and eventually stops them softly to prevent damage by collision. It increases contacting period of the colliding objects, so that it lowers the peak colliding force by spreading it in a longer contacting period. The principle is that it dissipates the kinetic energy of colliding objects through fluid friction of its internally equipped fluid flow orifices. In this research a testing instrument has been developed to verify characteristics of shock absorbers experimentally. The instrument is developed such that a mass(steel block) is dropped vertically at a certain height under gravity. The mass is guided to collide a shock absorber assembled on a load cell which is firmly mounted on a base. At different height the mass is dropped under gravity and the colliding force is measured by the load cell. The testing instrument is also equipped with a data acquisition system such that digital data of the force variation with time are obtained in real time. A commercial shock absorber with multiple orifices is chosen and its characteristics are measured using the developed testing instrument. It is confirmed that the developed testing instrument is successful to get experimental data about the shock absorbing characteristics.

Using reinforced concrete intermediate moment-resisting frames(RC IMRFs), an analytical procedure is presented in this paper to establish R factor rationally. To this end, analytical R values were evaluated based on N2 Method and compared with the values recommended by IBC 2000. Overall, the analytical results correlated well with the code values. However the results also revealed that R factor might strongly depend on the system fundamental period.

Code based earthquake resistance design approach has some major shortcomings linked to the current R factor though it has a conceptual background for safety. As evidenced by the interstory drift index(IDI) analysis results of this study for IMRFs, current R-factor based (or, Life Safety based) design tends to fail in fulfilling other implicit and hopeful performance objectives such as Immediate Occupancy and Collapse Prevention. Performance based design(PBD) appears to be a promising approach to meet the multi level seismic performance objectives assigned to the building structures of nowadays.

The structural seismic responses with viscous fluid damper were investigated for the multi-story steel braced frames. The analytical modeling including brace stiffness ratio was studied for the response of SDOF system using state equation and direct integration method. Displacement responses from two different methods were compared with various support brace stiffness ratio. The results from two analytical methods were almost same and constant responses were shown in the case of 1.0 or more of brace stiffness ratio. Therefore, most efficient value of brace stiffness was 1.0. For the MDOF system application with viscous fluid damper, seismic performance estimation considering the proposed modeling was investigated based on capacity spectrum method (CSM) and inelastic time history analysis. For the different brace stiffness ratio, different performances were shown. Finally, performance results including proposed modeling by the capacity spectrum method were slight different from the results of inelastic time history. It was shown more precise modeling and methodology were required for the performance estimation using capacity spectrum method.
노후도를 고려한 학교건물의 내진성능평가 및 내진보강에 관한 연구

The purposes of this paper is to demonstrate seismic performance evaluation procedure and seismic retrofit measures for an aseimic school building structure. The concept of deterioration is applied on the assessments of 1st seismic performance evaluation and performance reduction factor of in the 2nd seismic performance evaluation. The total assessments score of `1st evaluation was 0.84(grade D) which means the building needs to improve seismic performance by retrofitting. As a result of 2nd evaluation, columns are unsteady on the earthquakes with 200 year recurrence period, and it could not perform collapse prevention level with 1000 year recurrence period. Also, the effective response modification coefficient was quite less than criteria of KBC 2009. For retrofitting this building, damper was installed for improving system damping, and brace was set for enhancing strength and stiffness. Numerical results show that, all members was not destroyed and the effective response modification coefficient was larger than criteria of KBC 2009 as well.
