This study examines the effect of dowel bars on the flexural behavior of a hybrid H-steel―reinforced concrete (HSRC) beam system with a simple ductile connection developed to overcome the limitation of a conventional bolt connection method. Five HSRC beams were tested under overhanging beam system subjected to two-point concentrated top loads at the free-end of H-steel beam and reinforced concrete(RC) beams. The simultaneous flexural yielding was induced at the H-steel under negative moments and RC beams under positive moments. Test results showed that the propagation of flexural cracks and peak strength of HSRC beams were insignificantly influenced by the configuration of dowel bars. Meanwhile, the flexural ductility of HSRC beams was enhanced by the dowel bars with reliable anchorage into H-steel beams, indicating that the displacement ductility ratio of HSRC beams with anchored dowel bars was approximately 1.5 times higher than that of hybrid beams with bolt connections. Furthermore, the failure loads of HSRC beams with anchored dowel bars could be accurately estimated by the collapse mechanism derived under consideration of a rigid joint for the developed ductile connection.
