Re-examination of Criticism on the "Uniformity" of Korean Apartments
변나향,Byun, Nahyang The Korean Housing Association 2015 한국주거학회 논문집 Vol.26 No.6
Current criticism regarding the "uniformity" of Korean apartments has shown not only tendencies of emotional and unscholarly criticism, but also lack of academic discourse. They tend to stay at the common-sense level and be quite subjective without supporting facts. This research began with questioning the phenomenon of seeing Korean apartments as an object of negative criticism. The research questions for this study are: 1. Of the living space of so-called apartment houses, what elements should be called uniform?; 2. How should the implications of the findings be interpreted? In this context, this study aims to reinterpret criticisms on the uniformity of apartments from a new point of view. First, literature review is done to examine characteristics of Korean apartments in the social-cultural, economic, and physical contexts. Next, existing non-academic, abstract criticisms are classified into three trends, to show that the way of understanding architectural spaces by those criticisms are limited and weighted towards visual perceptions focused only on the shape of architectural structures. Finally, it is argued that the viewpoints of space and residents' experience should be treated as important for the reinterpretation of criticisms on the uniformity. This is validated through presenting relevant cases such as changes of space uses, diversified lifestyles being accepted, and the expansion of living space.

This research aims to develop design guidelines for expanding the supply of urban smart farms, with a focus on facility layout based on building use. The approach for guideline development was established through prior examination of related literature, overseas guidelines, and case studies. The study underscores the potential for smart farms, which have demonstrated economic and productive viability in agricultural areas, to be implemented in urban settings through various physical means. To integrate smart farms seamlessly into urban environments, numerous factors must be taken into account. Among these, smart farm facility planning techniques were deemed fundamental. Through case studies involving the integration of buildings and smart farms, particularly greenhouses, installation methods in existing buildings or new constructions were simulated and proposed. Building upon this, the design guideline framework categorizes the urban environment into residential, commercial, educational, and local community facilities. For each setting, guidelines propose the purpose of the installed greenhouse, design characteristics, recommendations, and considerations tailored to specific conditions.

The number of share houses has increased in Korea, and social recognition of this type of housing is also growing. In order to review current conditions and housing systems for share houses, an analysis of rooming house, a type of share house that is built overseas, was carried out. This study focused on studying rooming houses of Canada. Residents occupy in rooms and share common spaces with other tenants in rooming houses. The purpose of this research is to study planning guidelines, systems, operation management of rooming houses and the process and role of public and citizen participation. Based on characteristics of planning guidelines and operation management for rooming houses, implications which can be used for setting institutional and planning foundations for share houses in Korea have been presented through this research.

This study focused on the generational change of elderly people in the future based on the changes of aging background and household structure. After 2025, when the growth rate of aging rapidly becomes prominent, the generation born before 1961, the baby boomers who were in their youth after the country’s liberation, will replace the current elderly generation. This means that the characteristics and values of living of the elderly will change and not pass on to the future, and that the demand for housing will also be different. The purpose of this study is to predict the future elderly housing demand and to find out the issues of housing support for elderly people and necessary institutional support items. For this purpose, the preliminary elderly people are surveyed and analyzed for their present housing condition, perception of old age, housing plan, welfare facilities and demand for living services. The results of this study are meaningful in laying the groundwork for predicting the demand for housing and living support of the elderly in the future and proposing suggestions and preparing related systems.

The classification of apartment complex used to be done by building shape, layout, and system of circulation in the complex, which are from a form-based perspective. Layout "form" of housing complex is directly influenced by physical & legal condition of the site, leading to lower relation to resident"s living pattern. Thus, it is necessary to set criteria for classification of apartment complex reflecting resident"s living pattern. Spatial analysis technique represented by Space Syntax is well known to explain the human behavior in architectural and urban space. The purpose of this study is to set the criteria for classification of apartment complex using spatial analysis technique and to apply it to classification of actual apartment complexes. First, this study begins with reviewing basic design principles of housing complex and previous studies. Next, criteria are defined based on the characteristics of spatial structure in apartment complex by applying Space Syntax. In order to measure the spatial structure of apartment complex, "integration" index is mainly used. Mean, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis value were derived from the distribution of integration values and verified as classification criteria. Finally, we carry out the classification of actual apartment complexes based on the criteria proposed in this study and the validity and effectiveness of the classification are checked and discussed through the characteristics of the spatial configuration of the cases.
