A crack with electrically conducting surfaces in a linear electrostrictive ceramic subjected to uniform electric fields is analyzed. Complete forms of electric fields and elastic fields for the crack are derived by using the complex function theory. The linear electromechanical theory predicts overlapping of the traction free crack surfaces. It is shown that the surfaces of the crack are contact near the crack tip. The contact zone size obtained on the basis of the linear dielectric theory for the conducting crack does not depend on the electric fields and depends on only the original crack and the material property for the linear electrostrictive ceramic.

The buckling of two elastic layers bonded to a semi-infinite substrate under a transverse compressive plane strain is investigated. Incremental deformation theory, which considers the effect of the initial stress on the incremental stress field, is employed to describe the buckling behavior of both two isotropic layers and the semi-infinite substrate. The problem is converted to an eigenvalue-eigenvector case, from which the critical buckling strain and the buckling wavelength are obtained. The results are presented on the effects of the layer geometries and material properties on the buckling behavior.

Effective elastic constants of biomimetic multilayer structures with hierarchical structures are evaluated based on the potential energy balance method. The effective anisotropic elastic constants are used in analyzing low-velocity impact of biomimetic multilayer structures consisting of mineral and protein. It is shown that displacements of biomimetic multilayer structures strongly depend on the volume fraction of mineral and hierarchical level. The effect of the volume fraction of mineral and hierarchical level on the contact force and stresses at the impact point are also discussed.

Effect of transverse electric fields on fracture behavior in ferroelectric ceramics under purely electrical loading is investigated. It is shown that the shape and size of the domain switching zone depend strongly on the ratio of the transverse electric field to the coercive electric field as well as the direction of the applied electric field. Under small-scale conditions, the crack-tip mode Ⅰ and Ⅱ stress intensity factors induced by ferroelectric domain switching are numerically obtained. The crack kinking in ferroelectric ceramics is also discussed.

Effective elastic constants of bone-like biocomposites are investigated numerically. The bone-like materials are composed of strong layers and weak layers, and hierarchically structured. The unit cell model is employed to obtain the effective elastic constants. The effective anisotropic elastic constants of bone-like composites are obtained by using the potential energy method and finite element analysis. The effects of the Poisson’s ratio, elastic modulus, hierarchical level, volume fraction and aspect ratio of the strong layer composed of the composites on the effective elastic constants are discussed.

Experimental procedure to measure fracture toughness (J$_{c}$) under mixed mode loading using CTS(Compact Tension-Shear) specimens is described. It\`s loading angle ranges from 0$^{\circ}$ to 45$^{\circ}$ with interval of 157. The general outline of experimental procedure is similar to that of ASTM E8l3-89 fur mode I fracture. Equations fur determining J-integral is quoted from the authors' previous works. The relation between unloading compliance and physical crack size was calibrated. As an example, fracture toughness of aluminum alloy 2024p-7361 was measured and some reasonable results of J$_{c}$ with various loading angles were obtained.
