Characteristics of Modified Soil-Aggregate System and Their Application in Pavements

Modification techniques that involve mixing geomaterials with stabilizers in road foundations have been widely used to improvethe performance of pavement and to reduce its thickness. However, these techniques have been empirically applied in the field, buthave not been quantitatively established for design criteria. The characteristics of various modified mixtures and their applications inpavement structure are evaluated. Fundamental mechanical experiments, including unconfined compressive tests and repeated loadresilient modulus-deformation tests were conducted on coarse-grained subgrades soils mixed with various types and amounts ofstabilizer, in order to investigate the strength and deformation characteristics of modified soil mixtures. Then, a parametric study wasconducted to evaluate the performance of each modified mixture used in pavement structure through finite element method with anonlinear stress-dependent soil model.

Pipeline is very important infrastructure which is directly related to our daily life. Nevertheless, it is not consideredsignificantly unless it breaks. As most pipelines are buried at a certain depth from the surface of road pavement inurban areas, they are subjected to traffic load. This paper presents the performance of buried concrete pipe under heavytraffic load. Hence, one of the major factors affecting their performance is burial depth. To consider this factor, theratio of burial depth (H) to diameter of pipe (D) was defined as a key variable. The integrity of buried concrete pipewas investigated with two cases of ratio of burial depth to pipe diameter (H/D=2 and H/D=4). The results provide thelimit burial depth to ensure the soundness of buried concrete pipe subjected to heavy traffic load, and more economicaldesign is anticipated with the results.

Jeju island has a special ground layer called ‘Sumgol’ due to the geological characteristics. The terminology ‘Sumgol’ is generally defined as the rain fall flows through the Sumgol without blocking and smaller size than cave, which men cannot enter. This paper presents the influence of the Sumgol on ground stability under various loading conditions using numerical simulations when the airport is constructed. The results showed that the vertical settlements of each section are within the allowable settlement.

Engineers should take great care of characterizing the engineering properties of mudrock, because the uncemented mudrock can be considered as a hard rock in appearance. Therefore, the mudrock samples obtained from the cut slope in Gyeongki-do were tested to evaluate the strength characteristics of uncemented mudrock in this study. The performed tests are index properties, slake durability, and swelling tests for the classification of the mudrock for engineering practice. To evaluate the effect of water on the engineering properties of the uncemented mudrock, resonant column, triaxial compression and direct shear tests with various water contents were performed. With the increasing water contents, stiffness at very small to small strain region and the cohesion value of the strength parameters decrease. Based on the test results, engineers should take great care of evaluating the engineering properties of uncemented mudrock. 미고결 이암은 쉽게 풍화되어 고결도 및 강도가 급속히 감소하는 성질을 가지고 있어 사면 붕괴 등의 문제를 일으킬 수 있고, 외관상으로는 단단한 암반으로 보이는 경우가 많아 지질조사 시 착각하기가 쉽다. 따라서 이암지반에서의 구조물 설계 시 이암 암반층에 강우가 흡수되어 변화하는 공학적 특성을 이해하는 것은 매우 중요하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 경기도 여주지역 일대의 사면 절토 현장에서 채취한 자연 상태의 미고결 이암 시료를 대상으로 공학적 특성을 파악하기 위한 실내 시험을 수행하였다. 자연 상태의 미고결 이암 시료의 기본적인 성질을 파악하기 위한 기본 물성 실험, 변형 특성을 확인하기 위해 슬레이크 내구성 지수 결정 시험과 흡수팽창 지수 결정 시험을 수행하고, 슬레이크 사이클 횟수에 따라 전자 주사 현미경(SEM) 촬영을 통하여 시료 표면의 변형을 관찰하였다. 이와 더불어 미고결 이암의 전체 변형률 영역에서 물에 대한 영향을 살펴보기 위해서 직접전단시험, 공진주시험을 수행하였다. 함수비의 증가에 따른 역학적 변화를 확인할 수 있었으며, 따라서 미고결 이암이 넓게 분포하는 지역에서는 강우 유입에 따라 강도저하 및 변형이 발생할 수 있으므로 구조물 설계 시에 각별한 주의가 필요한 것으로 판단된다.
