In this report, we describe mold materials that were used to produce movable metal type by the investment casting method during the Joseon dynasty period in Korea. Samples were obtained from the Wibuinja collection, which is held by the National Museum of Korea. Most of the mold material remnants were found in the depressed areas of the movable type specimens, and we therefore performed non-destructive analyses including XRF, EDS, and XRD. Through these analyses, we were able to identify the mold remnants as hydrocerussite [trilead dihydroxide dicarbonate, Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2] formed in platy hexagonal crystallites. Hydrocerussite was first used to make white pigments and cosmetics in ancient Greece, but this is the first report of hydrocerussite used as mold material applied around a disposable pattern for investment casting. The results of this study will further the understanding of the production process for early movable metal type and ancient casting technologies.

N/A In the view point of the environmental conservation and the energy reduction, the recycling of metal scrap is coming as one of the global subjects in the world. In this study, the formation and morphological change of the intermetallic compounds in the scrap of Al-Si-Cu alloy(JIS ADC12), which were widely used in diecasting process, was investigated in order to eliminate the Fe element, which was usually accumulated in the scrap. In accordance, the formation and morphological change of Fe-contained intermetallics by addition of Mn in Al-Si-Cu system alloy was investigated with the amount of Mn added, holding time and holding temperature. The formation temperature of the large angular intermetallic compound ascended with the amount of Mn added. The shape of needle-like Al_5FeSi compounds were completely changed to that of large angular Al_(15)(Fe,Mn)₃Si_5 intermetallics when Mn/Fe ratio was higher than 3/4. The higher Mn/Fe ratio was, the larger angular Al_(15)(Fe,Mn)₃Si_5 intermetallics were formed and the larger those were. Therefore, the content of Fe in matrix decreased from 1.64wt.% to 1.1wt.%. Reconstructed skin provides advantages to single cell culture testing and leads to promising results as shown by different validation studies. In this study we investigated the efficacy of "MCTT Skin model" compared with "EPI-200" and in vivo test. We conducted endpoint analysis including cell viability (MTT reduction, CCK-8) and IL-1 alpha release. Sodium lauryl sulfate(20%), Potassium hydoxide(5%), Heptanal, Methyl palmitate, 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, 2,4-Xylidine, 3,3`-Dithiodipropionic acid, 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazol and Benzyl chloroformate were selected for this comparison. Potassium hydoxide(5%) and Benzyl chloroformate were excluded from animal tests because of their pH. Sodium lauryl sulfate induced severe irritation, Heptanal induced moderate irritation. Methyl palmitate, 1,1,1-Trichloroethane induced mild irritation. 2,4-Xylidine, 3,3`-Dithiodipropionic acid, 4-Amino-1,2,4-triazole induced no irritation on rabbit skin irritation test. Results of MTT assay and CCK-8 assay were not different between EPI-200 MCTT Skin model but IL-lα levels of some test items different between EPI-200 and MCTT Skin model. We concluded that this MCTT Skin model is useful for alternative skin irritation test, although other tests should be conducted for many other chemicals in international validation study.

Nanotechnology, a multidisciplinary scientific undertaking, involves creation and utilization of materials, devices or systems on the nanometer scale. The field of nanotechnology is currently undergoing explosive development on many fronts. The technology is expected to create innovations and play a critical role in various biomedical applications, not only in drug delivery, but also in molecular imaging, biomarkers and biosensors. Target-specific drug therapy and methods for early diagnosis of pathologies are the priority research areas where nanotechnology would play a vital role. This review considers different nano-technology-based drug delivery and imaging approaches, and their economic impact on pharmaceutical and biomedical industries.
