과학자가 되려면 다른 학문에 비해 어렵고 특히 기초과학연구를 하는 과학자의 경우는 더욱 어려운 공부를 계속하여야 한다. 그러나 이것은 과학자 스스로 택한 고난의 길이기에 이들은 한결같이 과학자가 된 것을 만족하게 생각하고 있다. 과학자가 되기위해 험난한 인생의 가시밭길을 무수히 헤치고 살아온 박동길박사. 박동길박사는 약관 20세에 도일, 과학자가 되기 위해 살을 여의는 듯한 고생을 무릅쓰고 오직 학업에만 열중했다. 박동길박사가 과학기술에 관심을 갖고 지금까지 걸어온 배경과 지질학을 연구하게 된 동기를 알아보는데는 까마득한 박박사의 어린시절로 돌아가야 할 것 같다. 이래서 본지는 이번호부터 박동길박사를 모셨다. <편집자주>
쓰레기 매립지 침출수의 적정처리 Process 개발에 관한 연구

The purpose of this research was to suggest the leachate optimal treatment process by surveying characteristics of leachate from municipal waste landfill in processing phase. The leachate was analysed in terms of pH, organic and inorganic compounds, and heavy metals of 2 years. It was observed that the pH was light-alkali ranging from 6.9 to 9,0 and varied with changing of season, i.e. it increased in summer, it decreased in winter. The results are as follows ; Firstly, it was observed that the pH was light-alkali ranging from 6,9 to 9.0 and varied with changing of season, i.e. it increased in winter. Secondly, it was shown that the concentration of BOD and COD reached in the range of 2,148~33,180㎎ㆍ1-1, and 1,931∼7,655㎎ㆍ1-1, respectively, and that the concentration of BOD increased gradually, although, it showed that the seasonal variation of BOD appeared to increase in summer, to decrease in winter with decreasing temperature. The concentration of COD increased with argument of landfill-progressed. The ratio of BOD to COD is ranging from 0.9 to 6.5 and had a tendency of increasing as a rainfall in summer. Next, the concentration of T-N was in the range of 1,542∼4,875㎎ㆍ1-1, it increased with augment of landfill volume, the average concentration of T-P was 20.9㎎ㆍ1-1, it was hardly detected the heavy metals. Finally, it seems proper that the optimal process of this landfill is as follow; anaerobic digestion→extended aeration→denitrification→activated carbon adsorption.
