This study was conducted to select the Native landscape plants for desert type of veranda container garden at apartment house. Most of Crassulaceae plants were good for veranda container garden such as Sedum sarmentosum, Sedum rotundifolium, Sedum polystichoides, Sedum oryzifolium, Sedum kamtschaticum, Sedum middendorffianum, Orostachys malacophyllus, and Semprevium montanum, because these have drought resistance, shade tolerance and stable growth. But, Sedum spectablie was limited the usage as indoor plants because of weak shade tolerance. Dianthus superbus var. longicalycinus, Convallaria keiskei, Polygonatum odoratum, Potentilla fragarioides var. major was also limited the materials as desert type of veranda container garden because of weak drought resistance.
쌀 발효 추출물이 탈진 운동에 따른 산화적 스트레스에 의한 손상에 미치는 영향

It has been known that exercise, especially exhaustive exercise generate reactive oxygen species, and ultimately bring about oxidative damage on human body. Thus, we analyed the effectiveness of rice-fermented extract with high aldehyde dehydrogenase(ALDH) enzyme activity in reducing oxidative damage by a bout of exhaustive exercise. A total of 20 Korean collegiate students(mean age: 20.9±1.9 years) were participated in this study. They were divided into two groups including exhaustive exercise group without the consumption of rice-fermented extract(n=10, NEG) and exhaustive exercise group with the consumption of rice-fermented extract(n=10; REG group). The variables including complete blood cell count(CBC) 8 class and blood lactate levels, haptoglobin concentration, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase(CK) and γ-glutamyl transpeptidase(GGT) activities were measured before, immediately after exhaustive exercise and at 1 hr after recovery, respectively. Among variables studied, there was significant interaction effect between gtoup and blood sampling time in blood hatoglobin concentration of participants(p=.015). Compared to NEG, REG indicated lower reduction in blood haptoglobin concentration at 1 hr after recovery, raising the possibility of RBC protection effect from hemolysis by this rice-fermented extract. Nevertheless, because sample size in this study was modest, further studies by using larger sample size will be required.

Present studies were carried out to evaluate the effects of shading on growth of Orostachys species native to Korea. In O. japonicus shading decreased plant height in 'Ullungdo', but not in 'Youngdong'. In O. malacophyllus best plant height was 12.5cm with 70% shading but in 'Soraksan' plant height of 18.3-18.8cm was obtained in all treatment except 50% and 90% shading. In O. filifera, plant height was not influenced by light condition, but 90% shading reduced plant height in 0. japonicus 'Ullungdo' and 'Youngdong' and 0. filifera. 'Soraksan' showed good growth under natural light.
라벤더 정유 흡입이 운동 스트레스와 운동 수행 시 뇌파의 변화양상에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects by the inhalation of lavender essential oil on the changes of electroencephalogram(EEG) patterns under cognitive and physical stress situation in both male and female university students. A total of twelve university students(males = 6; females = 6) were recruited in this study. In order to measure EEG patterns, EEG electrodes were attached at the prefrontal(Fp1, Fp2), frontal(F3, F4), temporal(T3, T4) and parietal(P3, P4) areas under the international 10-20 system, and EEG patterns measured for 3 min per each period of immediately before the study, immediately after the inhalation of lavender essential oil for 2 min, immediately after cognitive stress for 2min and immediately after physical stress through treadmill running for 10 min, respectively. There were trends of the decrease of relative α and β waves with the increase of relative θ wave suggesting the relaxing effect of this aromatherapy, and also, trends of the increase of relative α wave immediately after cognitive and physical stress stimuli, suggesting the stress reduction effect of this intervention. In addition, these trends was more noticeable in female university students than male university students. With respect to repetitive measure ANOVA test, the sex and time interaction effects were observed in EEG patterns of some brain areas. In other words, the effects of lavender essential oil under cognitive and physical stress situation indicated sex-specific differences. Thus, further studies will be required to define the precise mechanism behind this sex-specific effects of lavender essential oil.
50대의 비만한 중년여성의 함초섭취와 복합운동 프로그램의 수행이 건강증진 및 체력향상에 미치는 영향

In this study, we investigated the effects of jointed grasswort(Salicornia herbacea L.) consumption and combined exercise during 8 weeks on ther body composition, physical fitness factors and blood biochemical markers including lipid and iron metabolism in middle-aged(mean age: 55.1±4.1 years) obese women. A total of 109 middle-aged women were participated in this study, and they were classified into 4 study groups such as placebo group(n=30), jointed grasswort group(n=26), placebo + exercise group(n=25) and jointed grasswort+exercise group(n=28), respectively. In the case of jointed grasswort group and jointed grasswort+exercise group, the jointed grasswort bolus of 15 g per day for 8 weeks were consumed, and combined exercise program including aerobic exercise and resistance exercise were performed for 8 weeks in placebo+exercise group and jointed grasswort+exercise group. When we compared the changes by these interventions on health or physical fitness associated variables among 4 groups, there were significant difference in the changes of fat mass and leg flexion strength(LFS) values by these interventions among 4 groups, respectively(p<.05), and especially, jointed grasswort + exercise group showed more positive effects than other 3 groups. Therefore, our data suggest that jointed grasswort consumption and the practice of combined exercise mayt be useful tool in the reduction of body fat and the improvement of LFS value in middele-aged women of 50 years. Further studies using larger sample size including male subjects will be required to clarify the health-improving effects by these interventions.
