Vol.19 No.12

The purpose of this study is to verify the pathway between elementary school children’s excessive smart phone use, social relationship(parent, teacher, peer) and happiness. For this purpose, data from the Children-Youth Happiness Index were used. Participants were 1163 children in 4th~6th grades of elementary schools surveyed in 2018. The results of the study were as follows. First, the direct effect of excessive smart phone use on the happiness was significant. Second, All the social relationship indirectly effect on the relationship between excessive smart phone use and happiness. That is, if children use smart phone excessively, it has a direct negative effect on the children s happiness. And also excessive use of smart phone caused difficulties in the social relationship, which led to less happiness. The results of this study showed that the overuse of smartphone in the elementary school children is an important factor that negatively affects children.

Vol.35 No.3

The current study examined the relations between sixth-grade elementary school children`s perceptions of daily hassles, optimistic thinking, and subjective well-being. This study also investigated the moderating effect of optimistic thinking on the relationship between daily hassles and subjective well-being. A total of 474 sixth-grade elementary school children participated in this study. First, children`s daily hassles were negatively related to optimistic thinking and subjective well-being. As children perceived higher levels of daily hassles, they showed lower levels of optimistic thinking and subjective well-being. Children`s optimistic thinking was positively related to subjective well-being. Second, children`s optimistic thinking moderated the relations between daily hassles and subjective well-being. Specifically, for children with higher levels of optimistic thinking, their subjective well-being decreased with increasing levels of daily hassles related to parents and teachers. However, for children with lower levels of optimistic thinking, there was no relation between daily hassles and subjective well-being. These findings suggest that optimistic thinking could be an important means by which we could improve children`s subjective well-being, especially when they experience higher levels of daily hassles.

Vol.40 No.3

Objectives: This study examined the effects of parenting behaviors and children’s happiness on children’s media device addiction. Methods: The data were drawn from the tenth wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. A total of 1,263 children and their parents answered questionnaires on the research variables. Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: First, maternal parenting behaviors had a direct effect on children’s media device addiction, that is, children whose mothers displayed more positive parenting behaviors showed less media device addiction. Second, maternal parenting behaviors had an indirect effect on children’s media device addiction through happiness. In other words, when mothers exhibited more positive parenting behaviors, their children tended to be happier, which, in turn, led to less media device addiction. However, paternal parenting behaviors did not have any direct or indirect effects on children’s media device addiction. Conclusion: This study confirmed that positive maternal parenting behaviors and children’s happiness are protective factors for children’s media device addiction. In addition, these findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms linking parenting behaviors to children’s media device addiction.

Vol.41 No.2

Objectives: This study examined the longitudinal effects of parenting behaviors and early school-age children’s executive function difficulties on problem behaviors. Methods: The data for this longitudinal study were drawn from the eighth, ninth, and tenth waves of the Panel Study on Korean Children. A total of 1,228 children and their families participated. Fathers and mothers reported their parenting behaviors at Time 1 (first grade), mothers reported children’s executive function difficulties at Time 2 (second grade), and caregivers reported children’s problem behaviors at Time 3 (third grade). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results: First, paternal and maternal warmth did not have a direct effect on children’s problem behaviors. Second, maternal warmth had an indirect effect on children’s problem behaviors through executive function difficulties. In other words, when mothers displayed less warmth, children have more problems with executive function, which, in turn, led to more problem behaviors. Conclusion: This study confirmed that maternal warmth and children’s executive function are protective factors for early school-age children’s problem behaviors. These findings provide a better understanding of the mechanisms linking parenting behaviors to later problem behaviors in children.

Vol.40 No.2

Objectives: This study examined the mediating effect of toddlers’ compliance in the relationship between maternal parenting behaviors and externalizing problem behaviors. Methods: A total of 432 mothers of 18- to 36-month-old toddlers responded to questionnaires on three research variables. Data were analyzed using SEM. Results: First, while positive maternal parenting behaviors did not have a direct effect on toddlers’ externalizing problem behaviors, negative maternal parenting behaviors had a direct effect on toddlers’ externalizing problem behaviors. That is, toddlers whose mothers exhibited more negative parenting behaviors showed more externalizing problem behaviors. Second, positive and negative maternal parenting behaviors had indirect effects on toddlers’ externalizing problem behaviors through compliance. In other words, when mothers displayed fewer positive parenting behaviors or more negative parenting behaviors, their toddlers tended to be less compliant, which led to more externalizing problem behaviors. Conclusions: These findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanism by which maternal parenting behaviors influence toddlers’ externalizing problem behaviors. In addition, this study confirmed that negative maternal parenting behaviors play an important role in the development of noncompliance and externalizing problem behaviors in toddlers.
