N/A Background: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss(ISSHL) has been generally defined as an abrupt loss of auditory acuity without precipitating factors. Since ISSHL was first described as a disease entity, numerous reports assessing a variety of treatment regimens have been published. But its etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, and prognosis are controversial at the present time. Stellate ganglion block(SGB) has been used for the treatment of ISSHL by vasodilatation and increased blood flow to the inner ear. Methods: We reviewed the records of 152 patients to investigate the efficacy of SGB for ISSHL. the control group was managed with medications such as hypaque, heparin, steroid, nicotinic acid, and vitamins. The SGB group was managed with SGB and the same medications. SGB was performed with 8 ml of 1.0% mepivacaine. The efficacy of treatment was evaluated by pure-tone average following therapy. The recovery of hearing was defined as Siegels criteria I, II, or III. Results: The recovery rate of the SGB group was higher than that of the control group(61.5 vs. 42.9%, p<0.05). The recovery rate was higher in patients who were treated early, within 7 days from the onset of symptoms, especially in the SGB group(79.7%). And in the case that initial hearing loss was severe (>70dB), the SGB group had a higher recovery rate(64.2%) than the control group(42.5%). Conclusions: SGB is thought to be a useful therapy for ISSHL, especially in the patients who were treated soon after onset or whose initial hearing loss was severe.

In this paper, nonlinear active noise control (ANC) of a 3rd-order Volterra system with acoustic feedback and background noise variation is proposed, where a nonparametric variable step-size NLMS (NPVSS-NLMS) algorithm is utilized. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields better nonlinear ANC performance in a background noise environment, compared with conventional nonlinear ANC methods.

Acoustic feedback and background noise variation can degrade the performance of an active noise control (ANC) system. In this paper, nonlinear ANC using a non-parametric VSS-NLMS (or NPVSS-NLMS) algorithm and online feedback path modeling is proposed, whereby the conventional linear ANC with online acoustic feedback-path modeling is further extended to nonlinear Volterra ANC with a linear acoustic feedback path. In particular, the step-size of the NPVSS-NLMS algorithm is controlled to reduce the effect of background noise variation in the ANC system. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields better nonlinear ANC performance compared with the conventional nonlinear ANC method.

In this paper, a Gauss-Seidel fast affine projection (GS-FAP) algorithm developed for the linear active noise control (ANC) is further utilized for nonlinear ANC of a 2nd-order Volterra systems with a nonlinear primary path and a noisy secondary path. The simulation results, obtained by applying adaptive Volterra filtering, show that the proposed approach yields more stable and faster nonlinear ANC, compared with the conventional methods for the nonlinear ANC in case of noisy plant models.

The performance of the ANC system can be degraded due to an acoustic feedback signal. To solve this problem, the conventional ANC system using an additive random noise for acoustic feedback path modeling. However, the additive noise signal can contribute to the residual noise. In this paper, multi-channel active noise control (ANC) of a linar system with online acoustic feedback path modeling (OFPM) is proposed along with noise power scheduling. In particular, the conventional single-channel linear ANC system with OFPM is further extended to a multi-channel ANC system with a linear acoustic feedback path. The proposed approach not only controls the additive random noise power, but also employs the OFPM using a variable step-size least mean square (VSS-LMS) algorithm to reduce the residual noise. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, nonlinear active noise control (ANC) of a 3rd-order Volterra system, which is robust to background noise variation, is proposed along with a variable step-size Gauss-Seidel pseudo affine projection (VSSGS-PAP) algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach yields better nonlinear ANC performance in a background noise variation environment, compared with the conventional methods for the nonlinear ANC.
