Na, Ikjoo. 2011. Looking through through. Discourse and Cognition 18.1, 17-40. This paper aims to analyze the internal semantic structures of an English polysemous word through within the framework of cognitive linguistics. Through the analysis, I would like to show the central idea of polysemy of cognitive linguistics is valid: A polyseme amounts to a natural category subsuming a multiplicity of senses which are not separated but interrelated through such cognitive mechanisms as profiling, image- schematic transformations, subjectification, metaphor, and metonymy. Through belongs to a case of polysemy subsuming a variety of senses, some of which are prototypical than others. Those senses profile the atemporal relation in which a trajector traces a path leading from one side of a landmark to the other side in a physical space. Many spatial senses of through are linked to prototypical senses through image-schematic transformations and subjectification depending on the nature of landmarks and trajectors, and its non-spatial senses are linked to spatial senses through such cognitive mechanisms as metaphors and metonymies.
