인체에 유해한 질소산화물(NOx)의 생성을 억제하면서 열효율을 높일 수 있는 새로운 버너의 개념으로 촉매 버너가 제안되었고 본 연구에서는 대표적인 에너지 다소비 설비인 건조기에 사용하기 위한 촉매버너를 개발하였다. 산업용 건조기에 활용하기 위해 촉매버너는 평평한 매트 형태로 제작되어 열전달 면적을 극대화하였고 밀폐 공간인 건조실에 활용하기 위하여 예혼합 연소방식을 적용하였다. 새로 개발된 촉매 버너를 산업용 건조기에 적용하여 실험한 결과 열에너지가 원적외선 형태로 공급되어 감율건조 영역에서 식품과 같은 유기물을 효과적으로 건조할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 건조기의 열효율은 건조속도보다 피건조물의 함수율에 보다 큰 상관관계를 나타내었다. A catalytic burner that utilizes the thermal energy from fossil fuels without the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) has been developed. For this purpose, the newly developed burner has two features: firstly, it is in the shape of a flat mat so as to maximize its heating surface, and secondly, it adopts premixed combustion so that it can be used in a closed space. In the present study, the burner was used in a radiation-type industrial dryer. This dryer yields thermal energy in the form of thermal radiation in the infrared regime, which has been proved to be effective for drying organic substances under low-moisture conditions. Analysis of the experimental data has proved that the thermal efficiency of the dryer is better correlated to the moisture than to the dry rate.

In a gas engine based cogeneration system, heat is recovered from two parts, which are jacket water and exhaust gas. The heat from the jacket water is often recovered by a plate type heat exchanger and used for the room heating and/or hot water supply. Depending on the operating conditions of engine and heat recovery system, there should be imbalance in the flow rate and supply pressure between engine and heat recovery side of the heat exchanger. The imbalance cause the deformation of the plate, which affects the pressure drop characteristics. In the present study, the pressure drop inside the heat exchanger has been investigated in a 1/5 scaled test rig and compare with the experimental correlations, which are used for the design.

The present study has been conducted to develop a heat recovery steam generator for a 1 ㎿ class gas engine based cogeneration system. The steam generator recovers the heat from the exhaust gas of the engine. A water tube type boiler has been adopted for the steam generator to be compliant with a high pressure application. To secure the water circulation in the boiler, a novel modular type boiler has been devised based on the mini boiler concept. The boiler is composed of finned tube type risers, whose heat transfer characteristics has been measured and compared with the conventional correlation for the design.
