중기 갱신세 말기의 한반도 고인류 점거 가능성 -논산 산노리 구석기 유적의 성격과 연대-

A new palaeolithic locality, the Sannori Site, was discovered in the course of excavating the features of Bronze Age and later Joseon period in the Nonsan City area. The sediments of the Sannori site contain, as well as small numbers of lithic artifacts, several wedge-shaped cracks indicative of the cold and dry Upper Pleistocene environment of the Korean Peninsula. The lithic specimens demonstrate very primitive and unpatterned(Mode 1) modification and were retrieved from surface or out of their primary contexts. Henceforth, the reliable age of the lithic specimens are not currently crystal-clear. The calculated OSL dates indicates the artifact-containing sediments were formed earlier than the MIS 5 though, and possibly during the MIS 6 or far older dates. While there lacks archaeological evidence undisputedly older than MIS 5 in Korea, the Sannori site and its lithic speciments adumbrates the earlier occupation of hominin before the last interglacial. It is anticipated that more well-preserved and reliable archaeological record will be discovered around the inner Hoseo area and can furnish an explicatory background to demonstrate when and how the initial hominin occupation of the Korean Peninsula occurred.

충남대학교 박물관에 소장중인 전곡리 수습 석기군의 입수 경위와 석기군 양상을 소개하였다. 그리고 동시기에 발굴 조사된 초창기 전곡리 발굴 성과를 다시 한번 검토하면서 향후 전곡리 구석기 연구에서 나아갈 바를 제시하였다. 이러한 작업의 결과, 석기 형식분류의 용어를 보다 명료하게 재정의할 수 있었으며, 전체 지표수습 석기군을 기존의 분석틀로 계량적 검토를 한 결과 지표수습품이라는 한계를 제외한다면 기존의 전곡리 석기군과 큰 차이를 보이지 않는다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 현재까지 퇴적층 내에서 발견된 주먹도끼에 대한 다양한 입장 및 견해들을 다시 한번 짚어 보면서 전곡리의 주먹도끼 연대가 잘못 파악될 수밖에 없었던 근본적인 이유를 지적할 수 있었고, 이러한 점을 극복할 수 있는 차후 방안을 모색해 보았다. 그리고 최근 발견된 전곡리 85-12 지점을 사례로 들며, 앞으로 다양하고 흥미로운 해석이 이루어질 수 있는 가능성을 보이지만 선행 연구가 감수해야 했던 시행착오를 다시 반복해서는 안 될 필요성을 제시하였다. This article is a substitute for an official report of the lithic assemblage stored at Chungnam National University Museum (CNUM). The assemblage was originally acquired by previous museum personnel through several field trips at Jeongokri in 1979. Taking advantage of introducing the Jeongokri assemblage at CNUM, we also reviewed and examined the result of the past Jeongokri Excavation sessions during the earliest phase from 1979 to 1981 in order to suggest some future issues about the archaeological research of the Jeongokri site. A total of 196 lithic specimens were observed and re-classified according to a more refined typological scheme; their quantitative attributes were compiled and analyzed with the same method as adapted on the previously excavated Jeongok ACF assemblage. The result is that: 1) even though the CNUM Jeongokri assemblage is of very cursory and fragmentary surface collection, the assemblage characteristics are quite similar to those of other previously excavated Jeongokri assemblages, 2) and that more clearly defined lithic categories can be established and a new tool type—the pestle—can be suggested to successfully replace the previous ambiguous type—the handplane. In addition, we closely evaluated the context of discovered handaxes within sediments and approached the fundamental reason why the age of the Jeongokri handaxe was wrongfully understood and miscalculated so far. Taking an example of the recently discovered new Jeongokri 85-12 locality, we summoned a caution that the age estimation of the Jeongokri assemblage need to be clearly based on more rigorous designation of typologically genuine handaxes, as well as on the sound explanation of artifact horizon and relevant formation processes lest any more previous trial-and-error should emerge again.
