So far we have studied the relation between the phonotactic constraint and the syllable in the theories, which recognize basic units differently. The results are as follows. Firstly, we could not explain the phonotactic constraint consistantly irrespective of the basic units, such as morpheme, word. The MSC, recognizing a morpheme as a basic unit, explains the phenomenon doubled with phonological rule as the separate one, and could not account for the possible and impossible words (Ex. *bnick, abnick). Also the syllabic boundary insertion rule, admitting the word as a basic unit, could not explain a doubled morpheme cases(Ex. robbed, dogs). Secondly, we could explain the phonotactic constraint when recognized the syllable as a basic unit. Kahn(1975) could express clearly the possible initial and final cluster by the syllabication rule. Clements and Keyser(1983) was able to accont for the initial conso- nant cluster by PSSC and NSSC. Also Selkirk(1982, 1984) managed to handle the initial and final cluster in English by the introduction to the sonority hierachy. Although these scholars' syllable structures are somewhat differant, a common fact is not horizontal but vertical sight of the syllable.

        영어의 전이음에 관한 연구

        김진두 한국중앙영어영문학회 2011 영어영문학연구 Vol.53 No.4

We have discussed the phonological characteristics of glide sounds in American English and analyzed by means of various theories, such as, an insertion analysis, a deletion analysis, non-linear representation and OT. First, an insertion analysis has the problems of abstract underlying representation, phonological rules and derivational processes. In addition, it did not mention the CwV glide type, even though CyV were explained with exact formalism. Second, a deletion analysis succeeded in the postulation of underlying representation, that is, įu, which we accept in OT. However, it also needs a derivational process and resyllabication. Third, nonlinear representational theories use separate tiers or levels to explain various phonological patterns. However, due to the rich representation, it should put on a burden on the grammar of learning. Finally, we have accepted OT theory, which is a surface-oriented and constraint-based theory. We could solve the problems pointed out by earlier theories. We have accepted the input form, įu, of Cyu glide type which is postulated by deletion analysis, and explained all types of glides in English by the fixed constraint hierarchy. Besides, we support for the feature of [±vocalic] by means of the ID(vocalic) constraint in OT.

Dr. Jin Doo Kin 2000. John Wesley and Philanthropic Movement, Collected Papers on Christian Language Culture. John Wesley is well known to the world as a great evangelist and founder of the Methodist Church. He is respected as a great social reformer because the evangelical movement led and developed by his leadership gave deep and permanent affect to the social lives of the 18th century English people. In his eight--volume 「History of English in Eighteenth Century」, written in the 1870s, W. E. Lecky claimed that Methodism, by its civilizing mission among the working class, saved England from violent revolution in the late 18th and early 19th century. This theory was given greater currency by the French historian Elie Halevy who claimed that England was spared the revolution unlike other european countries, particulary France and enjoyed the extraordinary stability throughout a period of revolutions and crises, which may truely be termed the miracle of modem England, Meanwhile, Halevy continued to assert that the miracle was made possible largely by the spiritual-moral influence of the Wesleyan evangelical revival. Many historians and scholars have testified to this theory. Wesley believed that the purpose of methodism is 'to reform the nation and spread the scriptural holiness throughout the world.' And his methods of social reformation were mainly three ; evangelical preaching, holiness movement and philanthropy. These three were simultaneously and consistently performed everywhere the revival was flourished. However, this book aimed at researching history of mcthodist philanthropy appeared since John Wesley's revival in England. Wesleyan philanthropy, together with evangelical holiness movement produced a driving force for the 'reformation of manners and morals' of the English people at that time. Wesley lived a exemplary life of stewardship. He spent 28 pounds for himself and 2 pounds for the poor when he earned 30 pounds each year as a fellow at Oxford. In later years, though his income increased more and more up to 40,000 pounds from selling his books he still spent only 28 pounds for himself every year and gave all the rest of his income away to the poor. Wesley strenuously taught his followers to 'earn as you can, save as you can and give as you can', and this motto has ever been a disciplinary charter of methodist living. The age in which Wesley lived was one of almost inconceivable debauchery. The moral character of the nation was deseased and corrupted, in the situation of this social-moral decadence Wesley was practically concerned about the political, social and economic evils that affected the moral life and the welfare of the people of his time. Methodist philanthropy was born and spread throughout the land changing the quality and way of life of the working class in the 18th century England. He raised 'relief fund' for the poor, Also, he set up fine medical dispensaries, adapted an electrical machines and wrote a medical book for healing. He founded the orphanages and the schools for the poor children. He was deeply involved in the reformation of penal law and prison, abolition of slavery and temperance movement. Further, 'stranger's friendly society' was formed for the homeless people and the labourers in the industrial towns, and 'trade union' movement developed successfully by the early methodists. Wesleyan philanthropy has been so effective and influential that it deserves to be respected for its great contribution to the reformation of lives of the individuals, the society and the nation as a whole in England. Today, we find one of the best examples in which the Korean Church needs to learn what and how to do for the reformation of our nation that is suffering from various social deseases in this rapidly degrading situation.

An Anti-faithfulness Constraint Approach to Truncation and Augmentation in Lardil

        김진두 한국중원언어학회 2014 언어학연구 Vol.0 No.32

In this paper I argue that there is an anti-faithfulness constraint on the truncation and the augmentation in Lardil. I define an anti-faithfulness constraint as the logical negation of the faithfulness constraint. The original input-output relation is extended into the output-output correspondence among morphologically related forms, which is called as transderivational faithfulness at the truncation. In the same vein we accept the output-output anti-faithfulness constraint, which is antithetical to the output-output faithfulness constraint. In addition, I propose base-derivative relation should be extended into the isolation form of the stem at the inflectional paradigm. To analyze the truncation and augmentation in Lardil, I propose a fixed constraint ranking schema with anti-faithfulness constraint, that is, BIMORAIC CONSTRAINT, CODACON, ANCHOR-R (Stem, R, Syllable, R) >> ¬MAX, ¬DEP >> MAX, DEP. Supporting with this ranking schema, I could provide a feasible account of a long standing problem of the truncation and the augmentation in Lardil.
