This paper is an experimental study on the freezing protection valve used for solar water heating, air-conditioning systems, and plumbing systems. When the phase change occurs from liquidto solid, most of the substances except water volumetrically shrink. And referred to as PCM(Phase Change Material)a substance with such properties, the phase change temperature varies depending on the material. To prevent the freezing of the plumbing system, such as air-conditioning system in the winter season, we developed a several types of freezing protection valve using PCM whose freezing temperature are 2-4℃. The working principle of the freezing protection valve is that the fluid inside the pipe is released to prevent the system-collapse when fluid temperature reaches the freezing temperature of the PCM. And then the valve is closed and returned to the original position automatically when the temperature of the operating fluidrises. In this paper, the operating temperatures, discharge flow rate and the response characteristics of the valve during the operation are tested and investigated. From the results of this research the freezing protection valves employing PCM are expected to be commercialized in the near future.

In this study, ice slurry generator using air cylinder was designed and manufactured to investigate the heat transfer characteristic of the ice slurry generator. The ice slurry generator has the same shape as the shell-and-tube type heat exchanger. Refrigerant is flowing in the shell side and ethylene glycol solution in the tube side. The experiment was conducted on performance of ice slurry generator using air cylinder with standard condition and the results are plotted on the time scale. The experimental tests on the various concentration of ethylene glycol solution, the various solution velocity in the tube side and the various tube size have been carried. For the above experimental conditions, ice making characteristics of the ice slurry generator are evaluated in terms of the overall heat transfer coefficient. And the experimental results show that the overall heat transfer coefficient of the system is increased as the tube size and the concentration of ethylene glycol decreases.

The liquid cooling effect of a natural convection type radiator by using the PCM has been investigated experimentally. The radiator size is 423×295×83 ㎜ and PCM container size is 398×270×26 ㎜. The objective is elapsed time higher than maximum time to reach for maximum operating temperature of a general liquid cooling radiator. This study, in order to study on the effects of the phase-change phenomenon, carried out the various mass flow rate, input electric power, ambient and melting point of three type PCM. For the above experimental parameter, the melting time was performed about 180/250/560 min at input power 150 W and ambient 30℃ from using the three type PCM(PCM_S1/S2/S3) respectively. Furthermore, the effects of the thermal dissipation was decreased higher input power than lower input power at heating block and melting time of PCM. However, the effects of mass flow rate did not nearly affect of the thermal performance especially.

In this study, Ice slurry generator heat transfer characteristics are experimentally investigated for the ice slurry generating system with scraper which is pneumatically operated. The ice slurry generator has the same shape as the vertical double tube type heat exchanger. Refrigerant is flowing in the outside tube and ethylene glycol solution in the inside tube. Refrigerant and solution water are parallel flow type which entering bottom of generator and leaving top of generator. The experimentations are conducted under the various test conditions such as compressor speed and cooling water temperature. For the above experimental conditions, heat transfer characteristics of the ice slurry generating system are evaluated in terms of the overall heat transfer coefficient and the heat transfer rate. And the experimental results show that the heat transfer rate of the system is increased as the compressor speed increases and the cooling water temperature decreases.

In this study, ice making characteristics are experimentally investigated for the ice slurry generating system which is pneumatically operated. The ice slurry generator has the same shape as the shell-and-tube type heat exchanger. Refrigerant is flowing in the shell side and ethylene glycol solution in the tube side. The experimentations are conducted under the various test conditions such as aqueous solution concentration, flow rate of solution and frequency of cylinder stroke. For the above experimental conditions, ice making characteristics of the slurry ice generating system are evaluated in terms of the overall heat transfer coefficient and the amount of slurry ice generation. And the experimental results show that the heat transfer rate of the system is increased as the flow rate of aqueous solution increases and the concentration of ethylene glycol decreases.
