Small Apartment Furniture Design Needs for Young Urban Professionals

Since professionals need to conduct various daily activities in urban housing of limited size, housing furniture and living spaces need to reflect young urban professionals’ lifestyles and needs. This study aims to examine US young urban professionals’ use of furniture in their small apartment units as a case study. A mixed-method study was conducted, which included face-to-face interviews and observations that took two to three hours to complete. Eleven young professionals living in Chicago, IL, participated in this study. Interviews were videotaped and transcribed, and photos of the furniture usage in each housing unit were taken. The data was analyzed using the AEIOU (activities, environments, interactions, objects, and users) framework. The following four aspects should be considered when designing furniture and space that would meet the needs of young urban professionals living in denser housing: 1) multifunctional furniture in multipurpose spaces; 2) smart storage; 3) modern technology; and 4) individuality. The results of this study provide useful information for interior and furniture designers who target young urban professionals.

A New approximate of the linearly graded p-n junction is developed which gives solution for the space charged density and mobile carrier densities as distributions within a finite space-charge width. The results obtained are in good agreement with the true unbounded solution of poisson's equation and represent a considerable improvement in space charge modeling over previous approaches to approximate "regional" analysis. The solution process is implemented numerically in terms of either the total junction space charge or the applied voltage as a parameter, it is appropriate for application in the analysis of devices by the regional method where modeling of space-charge and mobile carrier distributions is required. Results are presented for the space charge density distributions of linearly graded junction also for the space-charge capacitance and total junction capacitance including the high forward bias region.

The Einstein relation relates the diffusion Coefficient to the mobility and is frequently used in Semiconductor device analysis and design. A flux equation governing the behavior of mobile Particles in Semiconductor material is derived from the Boltzmann transport equation. The particles are assumed to obey quantum statistics. The flux equation provides the formal means for defining the transport Parameters D and μ. A generalized Einstein relation valid for any Particle density under equilibrium as well as non-equilibrium Conditions is derived. The relation is given in terms of Fermi integrals and a Scattering Parameter. Once the Scattering Parameter is specified, the Einstein relation can easily evaluated. The asymptotic limit for degenerate material is also given.
