When reviewing several types of married couples represented in Pinter's works, husbands are generally depicted as raticient and realistic, but wives are loquacious, sympathetic, and romantic. Because of these prominent differences between their characters, they separately pursue lives of their own and can not have the feelings of oneness. Still more they are unable to communicate each other. Therefore, their matrimonial lives are either formal, or series. of desperate and merciless infightings. Women who lead dissatisfied matrimonial lives have their common features. They struggle to lead meaningful fives and always look for new men instead of being satisfied with their barren and sterile husbands. Their struggles develop into various forms, but they result in three types. First, "Woman as Victim" who are victimized without achieving their desires ; second, "Woman as Victim and Victor as One" who accomplishe the part of their aspirations but can not escape completely from restraints. Thirdly, "Woman as Victor who attain victory. In order to achieve an ideal life with a new person, Pinter's women act as destroyer as well as preserver of established system. In their struggle, they positively act with pleasure as mother, and whore, as well as legitimate wife. For this reason Pinter's women are delineated as "mother-whore" image in addition to "wife" image. But above of all "whore" image is more strongly emphasized. Here, "whore" means not only an instrument of sex, but also an essence of human nature which craves for returning to primitive and chaotic womb, escaping from standardized and simplified normal life. The moderns are losing vitality under the mechanized and automated modern society. Therefore, the very moment when they force themselves out of these social bondages and restraints, they are representing as "whore" image. Consequently, we can not condemn Pinter's women who act against traditional morality and ethics. They are most humanistic person with the power of vital, brutish, and passional elements in that they fight against ostentation and hypocracy disguising order. They bloom as vital flowers in the unfruitful and dehumanized waste lands at modern civilization and promise fertile future through their pure humanistic search for life. Pinter urges "recovery of humanity," and shows the honest unflinching vision of what life is.
