In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) administration would enhance the efficacy of cellular cardiomyoplasty with embryonic stem (ES) cells in infarcted myocardium. Three weeks after myocardial infarction by cryoinjury, Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to receive either an injection of medium, ES cell transplantation, G-CSF administration, or a combination of G-CSF administration and ES cell transplantation. Prior to transplantation, ES cells were induced to differentiate into cardiomyocytes. Eight weeks after treatment, the cardiac tissue formation, neovascularization, and apoptotic activity in the infarct regions were evaluated by histology and immunohistochemistry. The left ventricular (LV) dimensions and function of the treated heart were evaluated by echocardiography. Transplanted ES cells survived and participated in the myocardial regeneration in the infarcted heart. A combination of G-CSF treatment and ES cell transplantation significantly promoted angiogenesis and reduced the infarct area and cell apoptosis in the infarcted myocardium compared with ES cell transplantation alone. The combination therapy also attenuated LV dilation, ascompared with ES cell transplantation alone. The present study demonstrates that G-CSF treatment can enhance the efficacy of cellular cardiomyoplasty by ES cell transplantation to treat myocardial infarction.

Among eye diseases, glaucoma refers to a disease that causes damage to the optic nerve when the optic nerve is compressed or poor blood supply due to an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). As a treatment for glaucoma, non-surgical treatment through drug therapy is initially performed, but when symptom worsens, Glaucoma drainage devices insertion, which can lower IOP by releasing aqueous humor from the intraocular, is performed. Most of the drainage devices currently used in clinical practice are made of biocompatible silicon or metal. However, due to its uniform inner diameter, it is difficult to effectively discharge aqueous humor during intraocular pressure fluctuations period, and there are in causing side effects and complications after surgery. In this study, to overcome this limitation, glaucoma drainage devices with an adjustable inner diameter were fabricated using a tri-axial nozzle. and the diameter of the fabricated structure was confirmed through a microscope.

Osteoarthritis is a disease caused by degenerative changes in articular cartilage. In particular, articular cartilage has the characteristics of avascular tissue, so it is difficult to regenerate. For this reason, many approaches have been actively studying to regenerate the cartilage using tissue engineering. In this study, we developed a compact bioreactor system that is capable of dynamic vertical compression stimulation for effectively analyze the cartilage regeneration. This bioreactor is compatible with commercial cell culture plates and is designed to simultaneously apply different sizes of compressive stimulation. In addition, it was made in a compact size (180 × 200 × 160 mm) to fit into the commercial incubator. We established a 1Hz vertical-direction compressive to give the biomimetic stimulation. Also, we demonstrated chondrocyte culture stability without inflammation in the bioreactor system via CCK-8 assay.

Airborne and dust borne microorganism including bacteria causes infection, such as respiratory disease, skin disease, and etc. Antibacterial filters have been attracted because they can prevent infectious diseases. Previous reported methods for fabricating antibacterial filters, such as liquid dip coating, aerosol-based process, and electrospinning, have been developed. However, these methods still require complex process, and special facilities. In this study, we proposed a nanomembrane which can filter bacteria based on biodegradable polycaprolactone(PCL) via air-jet spray. To evaluate efficiency of bacterial filtering, a suspension of E. coli (Escherichia coli) was permeated through the nanomembrane for 10 minutes. As a result, it was confirmed that the nanomembrane could filter 99% of E.coli. In addition, the nanomembrane via air-jet spray would be manufactured as a large-area, low-cost, and free-form in a single process.
