The growth of the critical size bubble by diffusion process in viscoelastic medium was treated by an integral method for the concentration boundary layer adjacent to the bubble wall. In this study, we obtained a set of the first order time dependent equations to obtain bubble radius and gas pressure inside the bubble simultaneously. The calculated final cell sizes depending on the initial saturation pressure are in close agreement with the observed ones. The governing equations developed in this study may be used in polymer processing of microcellular foams.

The molecular cluster model for the homogeneous bubble nucleation was extended to predict the bubble<br/> nucleation events in elastomers, polymers and polymer solutions. For the bubble nucleation in elastomers<br/> and polymers, the strain energy overcome by a critical bubble was also considered. The calculation results<br/> for the number of bubbles nucleated are in good agreement with observed ones.

Decompression experiments from a PMMA compound saturated with CO₂ at high pressure were performed to investigate the heterogeneous effect of the additives on the microcellular foam structure generated. The observed results were compared with the calculation results by using the molecular cluster model. Uniform distribution of foams was obtained at lower temperature of 20℃ but heterogeneous effect due to the additives occurred at the solution temperature of 40℃, which is quite different from the results obtained in PMMA/CO₂ solution where homogeneous nucleation occurs at the temperature range between 40℃ and 70℃. Experimental results obtained in this study may be applied to the injection-molding process of PMMA compounds.
